292 + Clifford Intake + Dual Exhaust = What Carb?
Anyone out there have any advice? The guy at Clifford recommended a 4bbl Holley 390cfm. They can sell me one that's tuned for the 292 at $499. Un-tuned, those are $350 at JEGS. Rebuilt, off the internets, they're about $160.
I can get a rebuilt Rochester 2GV 2bbl locally for $220, or one off the net for $150. This is going to be a pretty long project, so there's no rush to really hot-rod it right now, but I also figure why spend the money twice, just so I can drive it in and out of the carport? Therefore, I'm leaning to the rebuilt Holley, but I'm not set on anything, except I do need to be able to move it in and out of the carport, so I can do stuff to my 78. Anyone got any advice or opinions on this? I'm a carb moron, but then, I'm a slow learner, too.

Re: 292 + Clifford Intake + Dual Exhaust = What Carb?
I have the Edelbrock 500cfm on mine and it matches well. I have the Offy intake though. If Clifford recommends the 390 cfm , you may want to go that route

Re: 292 + Clifford Intake + Dual Exhaust = What Carb?
I'm running an Edelbrock 500 on my 292 with an Offy intake too. I could argue both sides of the Holley vs Edelbrock carb debate, but the single most important thing to me is the Edelbrock has no gaskets below the gas level in the carb. Tuning isn't that big a deal for either one if you follow the directions carefully, and even that isn't something your going to be doing every week end. Having said all that, I'd still rather change rods and jets on my Edelbrock, than deal with the mess changing up a Holley. I'd ask Clifford their opinion on an Edelbrock.
Just my $.02

Re: 292 + Clifford Intake + Dual Exhaust = What Carb?
I like the simplicity of Edelbrock carbs and with the 292 the 500 will be just right. I've got it on mine and after tinkering with the jetting and rods, I've got it bone stock on my 250.

Pontiac OHC 6 ran a quadrajet I would think someone like Shawn Murphy Induction ( I think) could set one up for your set up

I had one of them. Linkage was one-off, due to the way the carb was oriented on the intake. The carb was turned 90-degrees from the way it sits on a V-engine. But, I can tell you that 215 cubic inches of 10.5 to 1 compression ratio and 215 horsepower, with 3.55 gears in my '67 Firebird Sprint gave some 225 horse Mustangs a real awakening!! I ran dual exhaust on mine, instead of the single system that it came with. It was sweet!!

Re: 292 + Clifford Intake + Dual Exhaust = What Carb?
Edelbrock, huh? That's just what I need, another option.
Anybody got any model numbers I can search on? I was explaining this to my carb man tonight at the local, and he was whole hog for the rebuilt Holley. Problem is, he's got two dragboats to tune this winter, so I'm not going to get a whole lot of his attention. If Edelbrocks are 50% simpler than Holleys, then that's what I'll do.

Re: 292 + Clifford Intake + Dual Exhaust = What Carb?
Im a holley guy so Id go with the 390. Another thing to think about, if you are going through all the work to make it a hot rod, why not just do it ALL the right way instead of cutting corners at the carb?

Re: 292 + Clifford Intake + Dual Exhaust = What Carb?
I have a Edlebrock 1409 which is 600 cfm on my 305. I am going to run it on my 283 once it's rebuilt... I love the edlebrocks, easy to set up and they work awesome!

Re: 292 + Clifford Intake + Dual Exhaust = What Carb?
actually, Im a Holley guy myself. I made the comment about me in favor of the Edelbrock based on Blue71's response about his 500 Eddie working good. 500 CFM is more logical in my thinking on a mild 292 CI engine than 390.

Re: 292 + Clifford Intake + Dual Exhaust = What Carb?
I don't want to really cut corners anywhere, but I do want the best bang for my buck. I don't mind spending money now, if it's going to be just fine down the road. And obviously, if one is way better than the other, then that's what I'd prefer to do.
Any way I go, we're only talking about a $200 difference. I just want to make sure it's $200 well-spent, and not wasted on something I can't get the most out of.

actually Holley has a 465 CFM vac. sec. 4-barrel that would work nice on that

I wouldnt pay Clifford to tune something that you will probably have to tune again later anyway. The Holley on my 396 is an old one, but I have it dialed in & it works great. 100 degrees or 20 degrees, no choke on it & it fires everytime. If I was going to build a daily driver & didnt want to use a Holley, Id buy a Carter AFB... I like everything that Edelbrock makes but not a fan of their carbs... |

Re: 292 + Clifford Intake + Dual Exhaust = What Carb?
Clifford has spent ALOT of time and research on the right carb combination for inline 6's. The 390 Holley from Summit is basically a "universal" setup. Clifford's tuning will be top notch. As said before they've spent alot of time getting it right. There's alot more to "tuning" a carb than just setting idle and mixture screws. You have to have the right jets, power valve, squirters, secondary springs, etc., etc. You may pay more for the initial tuned carb from Clifford, but you'll pay more and deal with more headaches in the long run with the Summit carb, especially if you're inexperienced with carbs.
Also, when choosing carbs, bigger isn't always better. Yeah, I had a 500 Edelburp that made my 350 run like a champ when a 600 just fouled plugs all the time and never ran good. I run a 570 Holley on my mild cammed 350 in my 68 and it's still a tad too much carb.

After talking to my dragboat buddy, who got me started down this path, I'm going with the rebuilt Holley 390. The best deal I've found is from Carburetors and More. Anybody have any comments on them? They're Texans, after all. I'd be happy to check out any other vendor recommendations, too.

Re: 292 + Clifford Intake + Dual Exhaust = What Carb?
I bought the Holley 390 from Clifford. I had to do a lot of tuning to get it to run decently. I would go the Jegs route and tune it yourself. Chris

Re: 292 + Clifford Intake + Dual Exhaust = What Carb?
I had the Clifford intake and the Holley 390 on my Jeep CJ. It worked FANTASTIC. The 390 cfm is perfect for this application. I am an Edelbrock man, but 500 cfm is a little over-carbed for a six banger.
