Sticky lifters
I was tearing apart this new 350 i found. It's got 4 bolt main and looks pretty good on the bottom end. I was trying to remove the lifers so i could get at the cam etc.. Well i got a few of em, but others are stuck REALLY stuck.
I tried degreasing, then oiling then more and more oil etc. Cant seem to get these things to come loose. the motor has been sitting 15 years or more so i guess they all just stuck. I already broke the top of one of the lifters trying to get it out. Any suggestions or ole tricks? Thanks guys. ------------------ 69 Custom 20, 396BB,Longbed fleetside. Pull them up (just enough to make them stay in place,& slide the cam out). Then just push them out the bottom.....you will find them in the oil pan! If the lifters are shroomed on the bottom, you will tear up the lifter bores pulling them out the top......69 longhorn

Well i cant get them to pull up any that's my problem really. I dont know if they are mushroomed or what's going on. also how can i turn the crank? i was trying to figure this out and such. Any suggestions are great, i'm just learnin what i can...

do you have the heads off yet?? are the pistons stuck, if so, soak them a few days with wd 40 or better yet, pb blaster. or brake fluid or whatever you have around that will eat rust. if the pistons are free, put a rag on the crank and turn it with a pipewrench, this has worked for me in the past. as far as lifters go, try to turn them, and soak them sommore, just keep working at it and be patient and eventually they will come loose enough to get them up far enough to pull the cam out. also, if you're not worried about saving the cam, you can put 2 long bolts in the nose of the cam and turn it over with a prybar to force the lifters up. this gives alot more leverage than a pair of needle nose pliers. A tool is available to pull lifters, but i have no idea on cost, it expands to fit in the snap ring groove and then you use a pair of pliers or a slide hammer to get them out. hope this helps you out...Buck

brake cleaner has always worked well for me it eats off the shellac that has built up from heat on the lower end of the lifters

you can turn the cam alone to push up the lifters if you rmeove the chain and reinstall the cam gear, thne get your grips n them and jam them up so you can pull cam out and thne push them through fromt he top
