Started the 383 today! (pics)

After a year and a half, two moves and building a house, I finally got her to the point of starting the engine. All I can say is WOW! I have never had an engine rev so fast and easily. I could only run it for a few seconds because I have not installed the radiator yet. Needless to say I have a smile on my face that I am going to have a hard time removing for a while.

The plans for this truck is for it to be a sleeper. It's not pretty, and that adds to it. I fixed most of the rust so it will not take too much to make is pretty again when I am over the sleeper deal. I am going to have to do something about the sound though, right now it's a dead giveaway that there is something stout under the hood. Engine is a 383 with forged pistons, forged crank and rods, and pro comp aluminum heads. Running 9.6:1 Tranny is a 700r with a stock rear. The rear is another thing I am going to have to do some work on.

Anyway, what do you guys think?

Re: Started the 383 today! (pics)

Thanks. Im the second owner. It originally had a 307 with a pg. Had to replace the normal stuff, rockers, one cab corner and a couple floor braces along with the bed floor. It sill has some rust in the bed sides, but I will get to that later. I replaced the original bent frame with one I got from a 72 that had 5 lugs, ps, and front disks. So, hope to have her back on the road soon since I now have renewed energy after hearing that thing run. Man it's been a few hours and I am still smiling.....

I wouldnt keep doing short runs unless you have a roller cam. Not trying to take anything away from you, just hate to see you take the cam out of a fresh build...

Re: Started the 383 today! (pics)

Thanks for the advice on the cam. I dont plan to run it again until I get a new radiator. At that time I plan to do a proper break in on the cam. It is a flat tappet cam.

I had a local builder build the engine for me. He built a 396 for me for a 69 Camaro I had and it too was awesome. This guy use to be a pro racer years back and has a good reputation locally for building great engines.

When I get it finished I will post more pictures. Thanks again for all the help.

Steve

Sweet! Put you some 70 series Flowmasters on the exhaust and only a trained ear will know you're packing heat under the hood.
