van tilt neutral safety switch

I was working on my van tilt last night, moving the neutral safety switch. I cut the slot in the outer tube, then cut the 3/8" wide slot in the shifter tube.

My switch doesn't fit down into the slot in the shifter tube. the switch has a slot in it, like a tab from the shifter tube should go in it. When I move the shifter, nothing happens to the switch.

Do I need to add some sort of tab to the shifter tube that engages with the switch? This wasn't covered in the FAQ.

Also, for whatever reason, my van tilt didn't even have a neutral safety switch. It was out of an earlier (early to mid 70s) "Vandura" It has the half moon shaped connector.

Sounds like you have the "van" style neutral safety switch.. the truck non tilt ones used the 3/8 hole like you cut.. if you decide to use the switch with the "slot" you will need to weld on a "tab" to engage the switch.

Some of the early vans used a neutral safety switch bolted to the transmission.

awe I see. I guess no one mentioned there was a difference in the switches.

Guess I'll weld on a tab.

So If you don't weld a tab on, It will crank in gear?

Mine isn't up and running.....got lots more things to do before I'm to that point....new truck wiring harnes, wire up 5.3, battery install (in bed), etc., etc.

this is what I used....but it doesn't show what part of the safety switch goes in the hole. I looked at pictures of safety switches on RockAuto, and it looks like a van safety switch would fit in the hole I cut in the shift tube. But I got a truck safety switch from ECE, so I guess I need to weld on a tab.

I welded the piece I cut out of the shift tube back in, and added a small tab that engages with the switch. Seemed to work. I held the switch on to the column with a hose clamp....should work fine.

I tested it to make sure it was in the right position with my multimeter, so hopefully when I install it, it will be right, but without being installed and actually being able to test with the tranny in reverse, and neutral its kinda hard to tell for sure. No biggie to adjust it though.
