Hey Guys,

I've got a 250 inline 6 here and it is probably the same as a 350 so I wnated to ask...

WITH the harmonic balancer off, would it be normal for it to leak oil when it is tilted forward down? I thought we might have busted the seal putting a balancer on, but I bought a new seal and it only seals around the shaft of the balancer, so if that is the only seal it makes sense that it would leak, but I wasn't sure if there was something behind it. Is this normal and I should just put the balancer on or what?

As you have observed the seal contacts the balancer shaft to seal the timing cover to the crank. There is not another seal on the front of the crank.

Thomas while you have the balancer off look it over real good for any grooves worn into it where it goes through the seal. Now's the time to put a wear sleeve on it or replace the balancer with a new one.

Oh the old balancer was grooved pretty good. I am throwing that one away, it doesn't fit my needs for the power steering anyway otherwise I would have left it in place. I am transferring my new one over from my old engine that has the late model wider pulley spacing for the PS. Thanks for the good thought though!
