Width on '72 rearend

There's a 72 5-lug rearend on CL right now...Same width as ours ?

If I remember right, I believe they are slightly narrower. I want to say like 1.5 inches each side or something like that.

.1-inch wider...you may have to trim your wheel lip depending on your tires.......

Correct.

71-72's are wider by .750" per side like the 73 & later trucks. Some late 1970 model rears were also the wider variety but it was 1971 when rearends were wider & came w/5-lugs.

swap on yours unlike my 60 that needs the pearchs relocated.

So what's the advantage of doing this....different gear ratio or just going from 6 to 5 lug axles?

Getting stronger axles too (17 to 31 spline).for the pre-65 (?) trucks.

On my 60, it is a combo of both.
