Nirvana…auto lock hubs?
Been working too much lately (and hunting) and haven't been around for a while and have come back with yet another stupid question:
Is there any way to put auto locking hubs (remote locking, whatever) on an old 4x4? Both my '72s are 4x4s. Getting out and twisting the hubs isn't the end of the world, but it sure would be nice to automate it. Any thoughts?

I have a set of hubs that I removed from my 72 3/4 ton 4X4 that perminnetly lock everthing up. That is all I have seen though.. I don't know of a company that makes electric locking hubs. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Jason are those auto hubs or are the hubs that are locked in all of the time? I always thought that the electric part was in the transfer case. I don't know though because I am unfamilure wth them. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

i think the hubs stay locked in its just the transfer case that engages and disengages on the newer setups.mt al i would just stay witht he good old fashioned mechanical setup. the newer setups have a lot of problems when they are actually used off road

When you put it in 4x4, you put power to the hubs, and that engages them. Then when you are done, you have to back up 10' or so to unlock them. They are definatly not engaged all the time. I know that for sure! The truck does not "bounce" when taking a sharp turn, when it's in 2x4, but it does in 4x4.

The 1980 Scout parts truck I just sold had auto hubs on it. You kept the hubs locked and when the axle spun faster than the hub, it would engage. Nothing electrical about them. I heard from some of the 4x4 Binder guys that it wasn't the strongest, but it did work.
Do the hubs from different makes + models interchange? I don't know anything about 4x4's.I guess I will learn since I picked up 2 72's this year.
