hmmm i was think of extending the cab of my truck only instead the normal way of doing it, i want to do it by adding length to the cab and the doors... the only costly issue i see is the door glass. anyone done it like this before?

I saw a 67-72 done like that before, it was in a ton of magazines and what not...this was several years ago. It did look pretty cool, but a LOT of work.

As far as 73-87 extended cabs, I have yet to see one that looks decent TO ME. Every one I have seen just didn't have the proportions or styling quite right. The red one woth the 3 spoke wheels is close, but there is still something about it I can't grip.

OK, let's have fun with math.

Measure a front fender, a door, and a bed side. The ratios will come out to be alomost exactly multiples of 1/2.

So to make the extended cab look "right" it should also be a multiple of 1/2.

And these are BIG trucks, they want to taper front to back.

So: The green one needs just a little more window. The blue one has too much window plus the stepside looks odd. The white 2wd is too small and add (might look OK if it's a short bed, but need it to stop hiding behind the tree). The red dually has the right proportions with the added section but is too cluttered and the addition is odd looking. The white 4wd looks wrong because of the no glass look. The orange one has the cab right but really needs more bed and tire.

So take a dually bed and tires from the green, the cab from the orange, and the white paint and pinstripe from the 2wd, and...
One of you photoshop guys chime in here.....

To build it, take a 4 door dually and take 1/2 out of the rear door.

I think the rear section of the cab and rear windows need to be tapered like a blazer.

That purple 4x4 was here in Springfield Mo. at the 4-Wheel Jamboree. I had the opportunity to talk to the owner. He hand fabricated his cab extension by cutting a crew cab down and used Dodge Dakota side windows if I remember correctly.

He did a great job on it, but the rear windows that he used just aren't proportionate in height with the front windows which make them look out of place in my opinion. If he could have cut the windows down to the same height as the front windows, I think he'd have nailed the look perfectly. ...Joe

What if one used the back of a suburban, with half of the back window/forward leaning rear portion as the extended part. I realize it wouldn't be as straight up and down as the back of most cabs, but with some clever pie cuts, maybe it could be made close. I'm speaking as someone who has no experience with this level of graft, but perhaps its plausible...

I agree, it's all about the shape of the rear cab, the length, and most importantly, the window styling.

I would take a look at the glass opening on the rear doors of a suburban or crew cab, then go from there. By shrinking the length of the window but maintaining the height and general shape of the opening, you could really maintain proper styling. You could even sacrifice a set of suburban rear doors to get the metal for your window openings.

Look at the difference in the D pillar (sheet metal behind the window) on the orance to the new white one. The orange truck has the same amoutn of metal all the way around, the white on has a bigger pillar that looks "clunky".

I think Pyrotechnic hit it rignt, you really want to use 'door' sections not 'body' sections so the glass shape and inset flow with the front door.

If only I had a dually and didn't have 7 projects already...

IMO, the 2 duallies look particularly evil. Especially the 2 tone bronze/white one with the front rollpan and updated Blazer nose. The wheels on that one look really interesting. Almost like the centercaps were custom machined. The shortbed looks better than the traditional longbed dually setups too.

That one looks really good to me. The slope of the cab toward the rear is just like the 88-88 trucks and seems to be what a lot of them are missing. Only thing that would be the icing on the cake is to extend the frame and use a regular short bed on it.
