The man is after me again.
Well guys, it happened - again.
Got pulled over last night for my exhaust. Which is now deemed "illegal", because when the officer has "his windows up and radio on and can still hear it, that's too loud". And since glasspacks are illegal apparently, my whole exhaust is just a law breakin' menace, because anything other than stock is illegal - his words, not mine. So, I now have a fix-it ticket, in which I have until December 11th to satisfy. Which means I now need to fix it - obviousley. It needs to be checked off by an officer, and if there is a discrepancy, a decibal meter will be put on it. Now, if I may ask some advice, how can I just get this over with, and get on with my days? Right now the plan is to buy two cheap turbo mufflers, and hope that quiets it down some. But, I also don't know about the position of my pipe exits, and if thats having an effect on the perceived noise level. For the record: headers into 26" cherrybomb glasspacks, into 2 inch pipe, exiting in front of the rear tires. So, suggestions? Ideas? Funds are short, as always. So, the cheaper the better, just so I can get this over with. Thanks all, I really appreciate it. -Sam.

Re: The man is after me again.
I think that your plan sounds good. Put some good turbo's on there and I would bet that you will be fine.

Re: The man is after me again.
This is what I would do,
I would go a get some dynomax mufflers like $60.00 a piece and have them put on it will quiet it enough not to be harrased.

Re: The man is after me again.
I have cheap turbos on my truck. It's not quiet, but it's not loud either. At idle it's not loud at all.

I went from glasspacks to turbos, and it's like night and day. Exhaust exits in front of the rear wheels.

Re: The man is after me again.
I don't know about WI, but in Colorado, ANY modification done to a vehicle away from stock is technically an illegal modification. While this goes unnoticed 99.99% of the time, he is at least probably right in his words (again depending on your state's statutes).
Does your town have a dB level limit? If so, have it checked before you make any changes. If it is over the limit, make the changes and have it checked again.

Re: The man is after me again.
It looks like turbo's it is!
I just checked autozone's website, and they have $20 cherrybomb turbo's. In theory, I think that would satisfy the need. It'll be cheap and dirty - I'll cut the glasspacks off, and just clamp the turbo's on. Thanks all. As always, keep the opinions coming, I appreciate any and all insight and opinions. -Sam.

Glock -
Good call. I'll check the Wisconsin laws, and see what the limit is. It should only take a little bit of time, and then I have a reference point to shoot for. Thanks for that. -Sam.

Re: The man is after me again.
Same set up as you, I throw in my Summit turbos when my glasspacks blow out and they (the turbos) are much more mild; they will do the trick.
I also get off the gas when im next to the law in my town...they've never stopped me, I just don't want to give them an excuse to yank me. I think they are too busy to mess w/ me in my part of town anyways-

Re: The man is after me again.
Before you do anything I would check to see if the officer was just blowing smoke. Find out if glass packs really are illegal and like glock35 said check on the db limit law and just have yours checked.
Just because he is an officer of the law doesnt mean he knows the all the automotive laws. Sheesh who could. Course they usually dont hassle people with loud exhaust unless the person may be "flaunting" his loudness. You can get turbos cheap anyway, so if you do have to change, it shouldnt be too much of a hardship. |

Re: The man is after me again.
Orange -
In town, it's never been an issue. Just, it was snowing last night, and I was following some people who were going rather slow on the highway. I had to pull a hill, and it was lugging down, kinda pounding under load. So, I know she was talking. -shrug-. We'll see what happens I guess. I think I'll see if they'll put it on a dB meter just for a reference point, and then throw some turbo's on it. CG- Once again, good call. Definitely going to look into it. -Sam.

Re: The man is after me again.
Cherry Bombs have had a reputation for being just about the loudest thing this side of straight pipes for the past 40 years.
A good set of turbos will probably give you a better sound without all the noise. That said my 71 has a burned out set of glass packs that are more like straight pipes and so far knock on wood I haven't been bothered but being the old greybeard that I am may give me a bit of leeway. |

Re: The man is after me again.
thats always been the case even since i was a kid loud pipes just manage to bring attention to yourself and the cops will stop you and ticket you and on further inspection will find and write other equipment violations// and yes some cops know the law and some dont//bottom line if you must draw everyones attention make sure you know the law(i used to carry a copy of vehicle codes) cause little tickets seem to add up fast to a whole bunch of money that could be better spent
i love cheap turbo mufflers

Re: The man is after me again.
Put some short turn downs behind the turbos. The ground will help reduce the noise.

Re: The man is after me again.
Cdowns - the worst thing is, is when compared to alot of other cars and trucks, mine really isn't THAT loud. Ah well, though.
Mudder - Good point. would turn downs before the rear axle or so help to quiet the old girl down more so that exiting in front of the rear tires? -Sam.

Re: The man is after me again.
quieter under the truck turned down. bend some pieces about 8 inches in a 45 degree angle or so and clamp them on the mufflers.

Re: The man is after me again.
Sounds like a plan with the mufflers...but hey I'm a boat rocker I'd go the exhaust cutout route. Nice and quiet when it counts...straight pipe when I want to be noticed!!!

Re: The man is after me again.
You could try a couple resonators, slip it over your exit pipe to see if its quiet enough. If its still to loud you can return them.
If the sound level is good find a spot you could cut them in easily. chas

Re: The man is after me again.
While you're doing all this, install some electric cut-outs on it too. That way next time you see the cop you can open up the exhaust as you're rolling up on him, then close it off while you're going by, then open it back up as you drive away.
Stuff like this just p!sses me off. Like you said, your's is probably not even close to the loudest truck around. Hell, there are new diesels with the mufflers cut completely out around here that are downright obnoxious sounding. And it's not like that cop didn't have anything better to do than harrass you about your old truck anyway. Lord forbid they get out and actually do some police work now and then, and get a felon or two off the street. I'd do what it took to get past this, then do whatever I could to thumb my nose at this particular cop from now on. But I'm kinda prickly that way. Jay

Re: The man is after me again.
Jay - the plan is to get it done and move on. I lose my liscense for the month of december, so it won't really effect my driving for a month. hah.
The plan now is to somehow scrape together 40-50 dollars, get two turbos, and get it thrown on as soon as possible, so I can enjoy the rest of my month of freedom without harassment from lawn enforcement agents.

Re: The man is after me again.
here in NC if its 35 or older the cop cant do nothing. No inspection sticker on my GMC and Im thinking on cuttin the pipes out but dont want too it may sound like its gonna blow up or something. Because the Z's are way louder than my truck when they go buy you barely hear a stereo and my pipes.

Re: The man is after me again.
uh oh, here it comes....
Sam, back on the topic of the turbos, I think I picked mine up from summit for $18 or $22 a piece...those #'s stick out in my head. I had mine dumped in front of my axle, but wanted to get the exhuast gasses out from under my truck so routed it out at 45's in front of my rear tires....just a thought if you have holes in the floor of your cab like I do-

Re: The man is after me again.
I highly recomend looking into your local laws on exhaust sound levels, and see if you have to spend a penny.
If you want to sound like you know your stuff, mention the truck noise act of 1972 it is ment for heavy duty trucks (smeis or tractor trailers) but I've said that before looking like I knew what I was talking about and then the cop just told me to keep my foot out of it. Turbos can be louder than cherry bombs... if there is room, i would just add the turbos onto the pipe while leaving the cherry bomb, go get it looked at (listened to) and then do what ever the heck it is you want to do. 70GMC... just becouse you don't need an inspection, that doesn't mean you can do whatever you want. If you wanna prove me wrong, chop off your mufflers and go have a rev-up contest with the man... see what happens. |

Re: The man is after me again.
I got a ticket and one of my friends talked me into stuffing the pipes with steel wool. Almost worked until he made me rev it up higher.
