so the motor that i scored off craigslist for $100 is looking to be a great motor. i took a good look into the cylinders and noticed that the cylinder walls and pistons are clean. the walls even still have the honing marks! i saw that the pistons were 040 flat tops with double valve reliefs. i popped the pan off and saw that the bottom end was clean, and the rod caps had balancing marks on them. everything is nice and tight. the only bad part of the motor is its a 2 bolt main. but i guess we can't have everything right?

Thats awesome.....And i hear (some) prefer 2 bolt mains.....But i forget why.......lol

My 2 bolt main Camaro ran 12.35 in the 1/4 mile back in '86. 2 bolts are stronger than you think. A 2 bolt BBC is good for about 600hp.

what IS the motor??? a honda B18? you haven't mentioned!

its a 2 bolt 3970010 010 chevy 350 with a 040 overbore with flat top pistons and 462624 76cc heads

I prefer 2-bolts myself. More meat in the web, plus if you really want the insurance you can add 4-bolt caps that have the outer bolts angle in to an area where.... there is more meat. Higher RPM's can cause the caps to walk around a bit, so GM felt the need for the extra bolts and bigger foot print of the cap-to-block. Usually this occurs from higher "sustained" RPM's, so it's typically not an issue. But I would rather build a 2-bolt block and add splayed 4-bolt caps than start with a stock 4-bolt block.

Either way, I'm probably at a point in life where whatever block I build off of wont ever be an issue.

that's what i thought... something about the splayed 4-bolts being bestest...

i think that's why the 4-bolt 400's are less desirable... the straight bolts are postitioned so that they compromise strength.

so... splay that 350!
