Easiest way to lay rocker

Hey there,

Just got a 70 chevy s/w with a 68 nose. Its in pretty good condition and I am going to try and convert it to 72 front suspension so that I can get the five lug disc brakes and then use a 72 rearend. Trying to just find a donor truck.

Anyways, the a-arms have been modified for a two inch drop so does that rule out drop spindles? I have heard they cause problems when both are combined. Other then that whats the easiest and cheapest way to lay the truck as close to the ground without doing a body drop.

Willing to do c notches in the frame if thats the next step but what about the front. Thinking about air ride but its just a shop truck so trying to do it on the cheap. The theme is real low and ratty with nice big wheels.

There is no "easy" or "cheap" way to lay rocker.

You mentioned your control arms have been modified for a 2" drop, what's been done to them? I would assume they've been stepped. Also if you want it to be that low you'll probably have to look at putting some kind of air ride on it.

I understand that there is no Easy or Cheap way out and thats why I asked the EASIEST way that it could be done.

Easiest way is to place a order with Poterbuilt or Suicide Doors and order their front and rear bolt in setups...........

You could probably get it as low as 69chevyshort without doing a body drop. Making a notch in the back would make room for the clearance and you metioned you already had moded the control arms,that just helps getting it a little lower. if you got dropped spindles that would lower it more. Are you using the stock trailings arms or redoing back half?

first laying rockers with big wheels wont be easy or cheap no matter how you look at it. Second it depends on tire size to see what exactly needs to be done. but either porterbuilt frontend or Z'd frame (z'd frame requires raising the trans tunnel) with bags up front and notch and link setup (2link or 4 link)and bags out back. Then you will need to drop the cab mounts one inch and cut the pinch to lay the rockers on the ground

Easiest way to lay rocker is cut them off and throw them on the ground. Sorry but I couldn't help my self.

Like mentioned above, there aren't any "cheap and easy" ways to get that low that any one here will recommend. You can get pretty low with out too much expense, but getting the rockers on the dirt is a big jump in time, materials, cost, and labor.

This is as low as you can get with out spending the big bucks.

That is plenty low enough. I am just building this truck as a daily driver, parts hauler type shop truck anyways so I dont need anything real elaborate. Just something the looks cool ya know. What did you do to get your truck this low?

It all depends on how much work you want to get into

In order to lay frame you are gonna run into a lot of clearance problems, like tire to firewall clearance & you pretty much have to remove your heater, inner fenders, cut your fenders, cut up your bed

I opted not to lay frame on my driver because of how much extra work & money it was gonna be, and laying rocker is even more

But like said, the easiest way to lay is to buy some Porter Built Drop Members
And the cheapest (if your time is worth nothing) is to Z the frame front & rear (you could also do a big notch in the rear)

To answer one of the original questions, no, you can't use dropped spindles with the stepped A arm. You can put a lowering spring in there though.

Kinda funny how you never said anything about "laying frame" or "laying rocker"... yet, that's what everyone is talking about.

I think I would rather just cut the original springs to the length I need and run a stiffer shock. I dont want to spend a whole lot of money on it, I need the money for my full frame nova project. Just want something cool looking to drive everyday.

fairly cheap. tank $50.00
bags $80.00 each(unless used.)
comp. $200.00 (maybe)
Mounts $200.00.
And how ever much ball valves and air line would be.
Ive yet to see a ball valve setup look good though. Anyone else?

What are the ball valve setups? And I am guessing there some other type of valve then?

Whats a good size and brand of air bag to use?

Ball valves or shrader valves thats the simplest ways but if your going to bag it it wouldbe just as easy to get it overwith and do electric valves and just have a couple switches around verses valves next to the seat. As far as bags there are different kinds for different apps, our trucks would use 2600's, i have contitechs, some guys use firestones or slams with the internal bumpstops, just depends how much you are wanting to spend as far as putting airride on one.

ooo fnlow yo0ur snappy. i saw your truck before it was doored and it made me do mine i love how low yours is but i never drove my truck pulled it out iof the woods and im at the point where i wanann drive it and doin what you did is more time besides i still have body work and motor. and a drive shaft night maree lol but it is beautifull i lopve your truck got any progress
