Anyone using a tilt column from a 73-87?
I'm kind of thinking about using a later model non-cruise tilt column so I can have all the goodies on the column.
Anyone else done this? Problems or hiccups you ran into? This one is from an 87:

Re: Anyone using a tilt column from a 73-87?
Hey Bob,
I took one out of my project truck (68 swb)!!!...the PO did a hack job putting it in....he had to cut the dash under the column for some reason, he also hacked up the brake/ clutch bracket to make it fit....and of course gotta convert the plug....I'm sure others will chime in, but that was my experience...You can kinda see where he hacked the dash in my build thread...page 1 post 24 last pic...

Re: Anyone using a tilt column from a 73-87?
I haven't seen one up close in quite a while, but it looks like some of it's brackets are part of the column. If so, I can guess that those would need to be removed. As long as the diameter isn't much larger, I can't see that it could be too difficult.
I'm all for a little cutting a tweaking so long as it is done right!

Re: Anyone using a tilt column from a 73-87?
My dad modified one for my old truck Sinister a while back
They dont just bolt in & its quite a bit of work to modify one & in the end its not all that great of a steering column If I had it to over again, I would prolly stick with the stock non tilt or found a van tilt to put in You can PM my dad a1953mdl if you want the details on how to mod it & he may have come up with a better easier way to do it, but I know it took him a while to cut it apart & weld it back together |

Re: Anyone using a tilt column from a 73-87?
I put one in a 51 chevy truck im doing ,got a older model then you have . It dosent have the box at the turn signal leaver . I think they look better . The mounting bracket will come off easy and you can use Borgson u joints and shaft to the steering box . But fitting to the dash will be the most work . I have an extra one i thought about using in a 70 c/10 . But so far thing is all ive done on any of my projects lately.

Re: Anyone using a tilt column from a 73-87?
I have one on order from a guy in MI that will have the wiper switch and cruise and dimmer on it. It should be in any day now. It is rebuilt with new bearings and switchs and a 2 year warranty. the cost with a late model chevy truck wheel (88-94) was 270.00 shipped to AR. Jim

Bob, go to Anderson's, the place is full of '73 and up trucks. I think they are around $30 for a column.

Re: Anyone using a tilt column from a 73-87?
Cool Chris, I guess one of these days I need to go there. It's been 15 years or more since I've been bone yard hunting.
I got your PM too, just hadn't answered yet. That would be cool, I'll probably take you guys up when the weather is nicer.

Re: Anyone using a tilt column from a 73-87?
Come on, what's wrong with a test drive right now? When the ground dries up some we'll need to head over to the 'yard. I'll go to the garage and double check my price sheet from them, but not right now, my couch has been trying to get away so I need to stay on it.

Re: Anyone using a tilt column from a 73-87?
Keeping that couch under control is job #1 right now. I have a nice hot fire burning and am tackling that same problem! I'm definitely up for a trip with ya. If it keeps this up we can take my snowmobiles over there!

Re: Anyone using a tilt column from a 73-87?
I would like some info on this too. I like the idea of having the key on the column. I hadn't thought about the wiper controls being there too, but that would be nice too.

Re: Anyone using a tilt column from a 73-87?
I used part of one. About the bottom inch I guess, I needed the splined part to mate with the squarebody collapsible steering shaft. I must have done OK welding it, as it has held for years with no issue.:P

Re: Anyone using a tilt column from a 73-87?
I asked the same question a few days ago. Was recommended not 2 do this tilt thing . I was thinking about an 84 column. No Go, big aggravation.
