Junkyard find? 6-lug 16.5 wheels
So I found these in the bed of a well scavanged '69 K10 in a junkyard yesterday. Kind of a cool optioned truck with CST, tach, and cab lights (on SPID). Wheels are stamped 16.5 x 8.25 and '69' (year?). I would have got them but there were only 3 in the bed. I looked around the yard for quite a while. Are they worth picking up? Think I could find 1 more eventually?

Re: Junkyard find? 6-lug 16.5 wheels
Yeah, they are kinda rare if you will, but only desired by us crazies here!! 16.5's are about dead as in tire manufactures are moving away from them since 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 24, etc have become kinda common.

Re: Junkyard find? 6-lug 16.5 wheels
Very interesting find there stomper, I found a similar set on a 71 K10 that was ordered new by the county water works div. with a utility bed out back. The wheels were also 16.5's x 8"+ wide, but they had the regular outer "stamped" type nubs for retaining the smaller 10.5" type hubcaps.

Re: Junkyard find? 6-lug 16.5 wheels
i agree. they are scrap metal.
a couple of years ago i purchased a '69 3/4 ton GMC that had the 16.5 rims. none of the tire places (NTB, Discount, Sam's, etc) had any in stock, and would be about 3 weeks before I could get any. Not only that, they were freaking expensive too, $200 a tire. I finally tried a 18-wheeler shop, just to see, and they had a pair that matched. I paid $165 a piece for them, but in order to have the truck inspected, it needed new tires.

How many more you want?? In the last pic there are some full size wheel covers but they are only for 15 inch wheels. The dog dish ones will fit the 16.5's.

Re: Junkyard find? 6-lug 16.5 wheels
Sorry to re-hijack but those wheels will fit on the nubs, not the clips. The hub caps for these are considerable smaller that these. Pic of the back of one of these will help me make the diagnosis! And I am still looking for some but since I have had problems, I am probable going to pull the clips off and go open lugs, which is way cool. I have 6 of these wheels, 2 NOS in boxes, and I think they are way cool. If I were you, I would snap them up in a heartbeat....As the grinch says, "Ones mans trash is another mans potpourri!"

I know there is a similar pattern for the 1/2 ton trucks, but smaller. Would they fit a steel 15 or 16 inch rim on a 6 lug? |

Re: Junkyard find? 6-lug 16.5 wheels
As long as the 16 inch rim has the outer "nubs" they will fit. My 77 uses the 16" 5x5 bolt pattern wheel with the 10.5 ID (half ton) hubcaps, but these 16.5s dont look like they would fit. We have some 16x6 i believe 6 luggers out in the yard that have the nubs for the 10.5 wheels so yes they made them.

Re: Junkyard find? 6-lug 16.5 wheels
I hope I can still find 16.5 tires. I have 16.5 Jackman spoke rims on my Blazer including the spare. I bought them from Jackman's factory in San Diego in '74 at there factory sale along with a roll bar.

Re: Junkyard find? 6-lug 16.5 wheels
I thought the 16.5's were split rims.

Re: Junkyard find? 6-lug 16.5 wheels
As far as I know, the split rim was only a 16" thing. That is what was on my 69 K20 when I bought it.

Re: Junkyard find? 6-lug 16.5 wheels
really? do 37's come in 16.5? I've thrown away two or three sets of 16.5 in the last six months or so. If you really want a set the next one is yours.

Re: Junkyard find? 6-lug 16.5 wheels
You guys that think they are scrap iron couldn`t be more wrong. They are rare and sought after by knowledgable collectors.16.5s aren`t dead, either.Send all your 16.5s my way so I can corner the market.
I`m not arguing the content of this sentence, but it sure sounds like an oximoron(not exactly quoting):16.5s are dead to make way for the more common 16,17,18,19,20,22,24. What`s common about taking seven sizes to replace one? For every wheel diameter another tire size.I`m sure if manufacturers had their way it would be as it was when people weren`t so obsessed with wheel diameter. They`ve been saying 16.5s are dead for 20 or more years.

Re: Junkyard find? 6-lug 16.5 wheels
All the good offroad tire companies make 16.5s:Interco(Swampers/Boggers),Gateway(Mudders/Ground Hawgs),and BFG.Any other company worth salt still makes a 12.50/33 in 16.5.It`s stock size 16.5s in strait tread that are limited.But,9.50s are made by many truck tire companies since 16.5s are for trucks.

Re: Junkyard find? 6-lug 16.5 wheels
SpecialK, I wasn't really trying to say they are dead, but the chain tire stores will have you beleive they are, just try to buy a new tire in a pinch! I watched a guy toss 3 perfectly good 16.5, and 4 good wheels from his trailer because he had a blow-out and no one in town had a 16.5 in stock (Flagstaff is no hustling bustling metropolis, but it ain't a po dunk one horse town either, if you have them get a spare and one extra just in case you need em and can't wait for the big brown truck to drop em at your door or the local tire store, as everyone I talked to said they were special order only, not stocked?!)so I basically said what the tire stores are trying to get us to beleive?! I also said I'd buy them in a heart beat!! I am looking for a set of the vortec?? (think general lee!)16.5's so I can buy a set of those military 37's and use them!! My Dodge is an 8-lug, and most 16.5's are 8-lug, I think my 07 would look too cool rolling on ole' school mags, with 37's!!
