What do you think of her?

Well guys about a year ago my brother who was only 14 at the time bought this old 69 c-10. It has a 307 with a 3 on the tree. No power steering or power brakes. The box is in amazing condition for a midwest truck and the cab really isn't that bad either. This last summer we bought a 72 cheyenne that was a pos, but ti was complete with all the power options and a/c. So now the fun begins. Between my brother and i, we have collected a truck load of parts for it and now just need to get started. Mainly waiting for my buddy to get his building up so he can do the body work. Oh yeah we paid $1500 for the 69 and $450 for the 72. I think we made out alright.

Obviously this truck won't be put back to stock. I have a 454 in the garage for it. Originally we were going with a 383 stroker, but dad says its too much for the truck. I have obtained a TH 400 for it. We have all the parts from the 72 to make it an a/c truck and 5 bolt with disc brakes. Want to find a 3:73 posi for it though. Plus many otheer little goodies for it. When its all said and done i would to put a tack vac dash in it and a tilet column with the cheyenne super interior. Also drop the front an inch. We are going to paint it back to the original olive green with the forest green interior(mainly because the seat is already reupholstered and the tonneau cover matches). And i think we will put wood grain moldings on it instead of the original black ones.

So, what do you guys think? Does the project sound like it wil be cool and that we made out alright in buying the trucks?

I will keep you guys posted as time progresses.

Re: What do you think of her?

Looks like a nice solid start. But I do have to question this statement: "I have a 454 in the garage for it. Originally we were going with a 383 stroker, but dad says its too much for the truck."

A 383 is too much for the truck, but a 454 isn't? I'm not trying to flame anyone, just trying to understand the logic here.

Your brother should have a caption beside him saying "See... I don't need no stinking truck!" Jeff Foxworthy would have a blast with that pic!

My brother would be driving that thing off the roof of the car down the hood and on the street before anyone could stop him.. LOL

Nice job on the truck,, have you done any new work on the interior? any pics of the 72?

I have to agree here on this. What is the logic? My dad used to tell me cause something had a big motor in it that it was too much for me...not the vehicle.

Re: What do you think of her?

Wasn't dissin' the Lincoln. My oldest son bought one when he was trying to escape from Florida. He bought it cheap in Tampa and drove it for a while. We sold the car to a guy who had a cab business in town. I still cringe when I think about how close we came to having to scrap it. It was a wonder that it ran as well as it did on the day we sold it.

Re: What do you think of her?

Looks like a nice project. I'm also wondering about the 383 vs. 454 coment myself. My only suggestion would be a 2/4 drop instead of just dropping the front 1".

Also, you would be better off just building your 72 rearend with 3.73 gears and an aftermarket locker.

Re: What do you think of her?

Nice start on the truck. I take it that no one is worried about the Lincoln getting scratched? HAHA

I thought my brother and I were rednecks the time back in the early 90's we were at Sam's Club and he bought this huge storage locker on scratch and dent clearance for $10 (!), forgetting that he was not in his truck. He was in his '79 Cadillac Seville (remember those? it was one with the square trunk, not the one that looked like it got rear ended by a trash truck). We had a blanket to keep from scratching the car, some bungies and a set of jumper cables to tie it down. We stayed on side streetsanddrove slow. I told himifit felloff, keep going! Ah, the good old days

Re: What do you think of her?

If you think about it a stock 454 is 350 hp?? Most 383 strokers that I have see or built are 400 plus hp....

Re: What do you think of her?

My take on that pix w/Lincoln is that driving a FoMoCo vehicle demands you have a spare.....

I think the efforts of all involved are evident. Congrats!

Re: What do you think of her?

If you went with a basic buildup with decent stock heads and a mild cam, the 383 would be a very mild 310-330 hp engine with gobs of torque and excellent driveability. I still like the 454 idea though. A stock 454 will still put out more torque than a mild 383. BB's still just ROCK!!

Big blocks have the cool factor when popping the hood, but a mild 383 with a decent heads and 9.5 compression will make more power and torque than a stock 70's smogger 454. Those 8.0;1 and 8.25:1 CR smog 454's made 360 lb ft in their highest form with many in the 340-350 range. It's hard not to get 380-400 lb ft out of a very mild 383. I built one for my ramp truck, and it pulls much better than the 396 it replaced, and better than any stock 454 truck I've ever been around. One of friends than runs a mechainic shop has an aluminum body roll back with a 454 in it, and iway underpowered compared to my ramp truck. Even still, my truck weighs 8800# unloaded and his is 8200#. You would have to bump up the CR and put a RV/torque cam in stock 454 to make it better than a fresh 9.5 CR 383.

Re: What do you think of her?

Thanks to all that have posted. To answer some questions when we toyed with the idea of a 383, we were going to build it around 500hp with the help of dieselwrencher. That was going to take quite a bit of high performance mods and dad thoguth my brother would kill himsel in it. So now we are thinking a good running 454 at about 400 hp. Not as much hp but plenty of torque.

I will probably end up rebuilding that rear end out of the 72 and putting a locker in it.

I never took any pics of that 72, just some of the parts. It was so bad that when i slammed the drivers door, what was left of the rocker panel fell off.

The story behind the lincoln is that all four of our trucks had something in them and i didn't feel like unloading them. So we just used the lincoln to bring home the go kart. We looked pretty good driving through town with it.
And don't diss the lincoln. It had 255,000 miles on it when we sold it in september and the motor and transmission had never been touched.

I'm still up in the air on the drop thing. I'm not really into dropping them alot, maybe on a shortbox i would. I still have some things to figure out and it will be a while before this one is completed.

You are right Leon, he doesn"t know how luck he is. Littl bro may have bought the truck ,but big bro pays for all the parts and does all the work for nothing. I guess thats what brothers are for.

Thanks again to all thats posted and keep the suggestions coming.

It is a cool project and even better for a first truck to start out in. It will be sweet with a 454 in it for sure.

Re: What do you think of her?

Well the thought on the moto is to put a mild cam in it, something with a little lobe to it. Alluminum intake, 10.5:1 pistons and an ms igniton system. Stock heads for now at least, and a 650 holley.
