New Guy Here

Hello everyone, I am new to the boards. I just got my first truck two years ago, a 1968 C20 Longhorn. I have always wanted one of these trucks since I was a kid, and the 68s have always been my favorite. I originally wanted a shortbed, but when we found this truck we just couldn't pass it up. I hope to own many more of these truck in my lifetime. I still want that 68 shortbed, and I would love to get a longbed 69-72 C20 or Suburban and make it into a dually. I also want to get a 69 or 70 wrecker. Here is a picture of my truck.

So true! My Dad had a 70 LWB and has a 72 Super SWB that I drove as a teenager. My brother and I have been arguing who gets it when Dad passes or decides to get rid if it - lol. I picked up mine about a month ago (I got on a air-cooled kick for a few years). My son who is 14, is trying to get me to buy a 69 for him thats for sale on a local road. In my opinion, the best looking truck that was ever made.

Re: New Guy Here

I bought about 4 of them before I got my first '68 Longhorn! LONGHORNS RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Welcome to the board and congrats on an excellent first choice. The Longhorn was a mid-year introduction in '68. Give us more pics and a shot of that glove box door so we can see the options.

Alright, I'll get a pic of the glove box label later or tomorrow. I have more pics of my truck on my computer that I will also have to post on here later. I have a million photochops I did of it last year and I will have to make a photochop thread later also.

It's your truck but.......feel free to remove that hood ornament...LOL! I am a purist when it comes to '68 Longhorns and really like the looks of the stock hood. My first truck was a '67 (still have one) and like the clean nose but have really grown to like the '68 eyebrows and hood trim.

I love that hood ornament, I have never seen anything like it. I took it off once last year for a day to try and recreate it out of clay in my art class. The truck didn't look right without it.

Re: New Guy Here

Mayo's truck was featured here about 4 years ago but under old management... here's some pics I still have of it from way back when...
This was actually the first 68 Longhorn i ever found proof of, and well before I found factory documentation that they existed.
This was that first photo;

Stan (the previouse owner... a few owners ago) did a few things under the hood... I think he said this is the original 292, but with a few mods...

Stan played with the badges a bit, called it 'cool truck' and badged it as so on the fenders. The Longhorn script was looking old, so when he cleaned them up and painted them, he did them in turquoise and black. He also added the "cargoil" hood ornament;

Dodge wheels were sourced so he could run 16 inch rubber instead of the 16.5's, he also liked the way they looked.

The wood over the front bumper was to protect the truck, he was into dirt track race cars, and this was a push truck

I want to say Stan was in the San Frasico area... but it has been many many years since talking to him.

Either way... I'm glad the truck is in good hands. Oddly enough, even though I have never met stan, Mr Mayo, nor ever seen the truck... this Longhorn is a little special to me.
I saw the truck listed on the Stovebolt link posted above, and I contacted Stan. He was more than willing to send me photos and give me details on it. He actually called me and we talked for a couple hrs. I think he had a Jacob's ignition system, a flowmaster muffler with a header up front, the praise dyno brake shoes which wear like iron, but stop like disk brakes... he was very proud of this truck.

Thanks for all the information Longhorn Man. We bought the truck from the guy that bought it from Stan. I have had it for just about 2 years now and I really haven't changed anything. I put a new set of marker lights because I didn't like the ones that cam on it, I still have to put lights in them though. I also put a trailer hitch cover on, and I got a tailgate for it. I had to spray paint it since it was red, and luckily I found a very similar color. I still have the original front bumper with the wooden plate on it, and I might put it back on the truck one of these days. After being in Maryland for the last 6 years or so, the rockers have rusted out but I have brand new replacement ones, I just need to put them on. The bed floor is just about shot now, so I had to cover it with some plywood after I fell through while washing the truck. I'll put new wood in it one of these days. I might get a radio for it soon, seeing as it doesn't have one, and I'd like to put discs on the front. I already got everything to do that, just got to get around to it.

Welcome home Mayo! Amazing that your truck's history preceeded you...did it lead you to us?

And, very cool it still has the six-banger. There's tons for speed equipment for those motors now. Great engine and a very nice truck. Good choice!

You have a dynamite start to your collection...

Actually I found this website through google. I was trying to find a pic of a bagged S10 that I could draw, and on one of the pages, it had a picture of a bagged C10 and link to the thread where people posted there bagged C10s. I looked through that thread and then went searching a little on this site and liked it so I signed up.

Yeah, I love the fact that it has the 292. It sounds awesome with the Flowmasters and it is pretty quick. Lots of people think it has a small block when they hear it. It accelerates very quick, but I just use 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. 1st gear will sometimes work, but it pops out of gear most of the time, so I don't really bother with it. I will get that fixed one of these days.
