Question headers run into my trans crossmember???

today i installed long tube headers on my 82 swb and before I realized it, the opening 3" flange is literally inches behind my trans cross-member. It's totally obstructed from putting my reducers and turn-downs on. I need to get enough clearance above or below the openings in order to allow me to install my turn-downs. What would anyone suggest? Anyone have the same problem?

Re: help! headers run into my crossmember...

freebird... I'm going to move this one to the 73 - 87 board. While it isn't so much posted in the wrong section, it is more aplication specific to the 73 - 87 trucks. I'm sure the guys over there will have recomendations on a replacemnt cross member, or possibly, another brand of headers.

Re: headers run into my trans crossmember???

I had a custom tranny crossmember made. I had it made for dual exhaust. Check my webshots. I can access the exact picture from this computer.
I use 3/4 length Chevelle headers. Older and heavier trucks had a factory dual hump crossmember. Check under 3/4 and 1 ton early model trucks.

Re: headers run into my trans crossmember???

I pie cut the reducer and aimed it below the crossmember back when my 78 had long tube headers on it. On my 87 I had to cut the header just in front of the collector flange and weld it back on pointing in a different direction.

Here is side picture of my truck. You have to look very carefully to see the driverside headers below the frame rail.

What brand of headers and what type of tranny do you have? For the most part the headers for these trucks will give you enough room to put the adapters on and make your transition around the tranny and the cross member.

Here is a picture of the lowest part of my exhaust system. The Chevelle header is nicely tucked up into the body.

Re: headers run into my trans crossmember???

where you able to make that bend without going lower than the frame? Those headers look similar to where mine dump and it is going to be tight there since my truck lays flat out.
