Re: 88 burban cammed out idle
Start with the EGR. Plug it off and see if it runs better. If it does then it is either the solenoid, or the valve. The solenoid should not be sending vacuum to the EGR at idle. If that does not fix it check for vacuum leaks, you have a pretty big one if it makes the engine stall in gear. Check the vacuum line to the power brakes and make sure the booster is not leaking. If your brakes work OK then the booster is probably good.

First thing I would look for would be an intake or vacume leak. If it is a holley carb it sounds like the power valve is popped

Re: 88 burban cammed out idle
Sometimes the EGR valve can be held off its seat by garbage in the intake, especially since I see you are back in the East Coast. In colder weather the condensation will mix with the rich exhaust at startup and cause a buildup that can unseat the EGR at the intake. The junk looks like bits of coal. If it happened suddenly, the EGR is the first suspect. After that start checking vacuum lines.

Re: 88 burban cammed out idle
I would pull the throttle body and check for varnish in the vac. passages, they have a tendency to get plugged. First, You might also unplug the vac to the PVC valve and run somthing in there to see if it is clear. I have seen many that were completely stopped up and it would cause the driveability problem. Re: 88 burban cammed out idle
my truck was doing that recently. I found a hose off at the PCV valve that goes to the canister. Once I put it back on it idles so smooth I can barely tell it`s running.
