rear end width

Does anybody happen to know the width of a 72 chevy rear end and are the stepsides the same as fleetsides? Thanks.

I believe the two different rear ends were based on years. Typically shown as 67-70 and 71-72. I can only give you the measurements from the inside of the brake backing plate mounting flanges, my '68 was 57" and the '72 was 58.5". Sorry I don't have the outside, drum to drum mount.

There is no difference if fleet or step side, just the year differences.

68.5"??? inside of the backing plate to inside of backing plate on the 71 in my driveway and the 71 in my guarge its 58" (maybe 58.5", if i go end of axle flange to end of axle flange)....

I measured my 71 suburban yesterday.
I have 1626 mm from outside drum to outside drum, that would be 64 inches.

Doh!!! This is what happens when you get old. You suffer from CRS (Can't Remember $h!t). I was even thinking those numbers did not sound right but you are correct. 57" and 58.5". I corrected my above post. Thanks for the reality check.
