Re: stacks

I almost put a set on my old fleet F*** 30+ years ago but didn't.

IMO, 4/6" diameter stacks inside the bed hooked to a BIG nasty diesel looks better.

Get a side shot of your truck and a pic of some stacks and ask the photoshop guy's to put them on, Then you can see how it would look.

But,

If you look like either of these guy's then just slap um on an call it a day....

Re: stacks

I think stacks are pointless on any truck, unless its an 18-wheeler. I'm no exhaust expert, but isn't there a mathematical relationship between the diameter of the exhaust and the output of the motor that it's hooked to? Doesn't the motor actually lose power if the exhaust is too big? It has to do with compression too, doesn't it? That's why the rigs use them, cause the diesels compression ratio is so high that the cycle forces the exhaust out much more severely that it actually needs the extra large diameter, right?

You could run regular 2.5" exhaust up the inside of the stack until about last 12" or so.. it would work like a big echo tip..

In the 4x4 world they increase the fording depth of the vehicle. Of course a snorkel and water proof electronics would also need to be included in that..

Re: stacks

Those are good points that I never thought of. What you see on the outside wouldn't necessarily be the true diameter of the pipe.

You were right on the money though. I wouldnt run Dual 4-5" stacks on a small block gasser.. Now a single stack wouldnt be too bad which is all I plan to run.

Re: stacks

A good design for an exhaust system will work to help eliminate exhaust gases from each cylinder. This design should look at the collapse of the gases as a way to create a vacuum to pull the gases that are following them. The size of the exhaust piping is important to get this reversionary pressure out of the way, thus making the engine develop more power. The bigger piping will not help unless it is SO big that it provides no restriction.

Stacks on a pickup look so tacky in my book----unless that truck has a some seriously large engine (like a diesel).

No one is hating on your truck. We are letting you know that the idea of running stacks is rather redneck. If you think they look cool, then go for it. If your going to ask for opinions, be prepared to get answers you don't want to hear.

Stacks can be cool, it just depends on how they exit. -

Not cool-

Very cool-

Re: stacks

Both my buddies have k20 trucks. Lifts, big tires, fresh paintjobs, built small blocks. They both installed dual stacks. One of my buddies powder coated his pipes black, the other are stainless steel. I will have to grab some pics. I will admit, when it is done correctly, they sound and look good. They are very loud, and since they are pointing up, they echo off of everything. Sometimes I hear there truck a great distance down the road, thinking it is a straight piped harley. Totally different sound then a truck with normal ran dual exhaust system.

There was a guy at the swapmeet selling his 82 GMC shortbed big block with diesel stacks under the bed as his exhaust.

Re: stacks

One of the first square bodies I remember from my childhood was a friend a couple years older than me who got a mid 70s stepside and had stacks going through the steps. Not personally a look that does much for me, but I'm a big believer in building your truck to suit your tastes.

There's another guy on here who has stacks on a 2wd stepside, but I can't remember his name right now. I'll see if I can find the username and a pic...
