Re: cb antenna mounting decision

I voted no antennas...CB antennas look about as redneck as stacks.

If we were still in the 80's, dual antennas all the way!

You asked, my opinion, and I voted.

I would have rather voted no antenna but if it,s something you want i had to chose just one over two

Re: cb antenna mounting decision

Take a lo0ok at the post I put up yesterday W\pics of mine. I run 2 antennas, but you have to be careful about placement and keep the antennas 8' appart. SWR will go thru the roof if you don't and that blows the output transistors in the radio. CB radios may seem "redneck", but they save lives and fuel getting around tied up traffic. As an ex 18 wheeler driver I swear by them and won't drive without one. CB's work where cell phones and cops don't, jim

Re: cb antenna mounting decision

If you're doing it for looks, I agree with Jeff.

Dual antennas are more finiky when it comes to tuning them.

After talking to you via the chat yesterday, I know that you're doing it for communications enhancements.

With that said, you'd be better off with a single antenna on the roof for more generized coverage. If you offset the antenna for instance in the corner of the truck bed, the opposite corner of the truck is where most of the radiation will point towards.

By centering the antenna, the donut shape of the radio wave is more perfectly rounded because the whole truck becomes part of the antenna. See your local Radio shop for an antenna (Wilson, Antenna Specialists, etc).

Check this out:
http://www.iec.org/online/tutorials/...ar/topic01.asp

It will still work if you leave it where it's at in your post and you probably won't notice a difference, but, if your going to "kick it up a notch", you definetely don't want to use the stock antenna. you'll burn up the radio.

Re: cb antenna mounting decision

Why go with 2 short ones? When you can have 1 BIG one..

As mentioned 2 is harder to tune, 1 central mounted is better. I like the look of 2 better as they are easier to mount and look more proportional.

They may look "redneck" or from the 80s, but I grew up with them and have had them in all of my vehicles. They are also a valuable resource in the 4x4 world when trail riding.

Totally off topic but that looks like a really old BFG All Terrain with a ton of tread on it. Just noticed that.

Re: cb antenna mounting decision

I'm a hard core CBer duals are good for looks when mounted that way. Your signal with the duals like that makes you directional on the side of your truck so if your facing some-1 they'll hear ya to a point if you turn to the side to them you'll blow them out the truck. Your just going for the equal look and your not going to put a CB in as I read. So the duals is the way to go and just use one for your stereo and in the future you might want to hook up a scanner then you have the whip for it. Question though what did you use to mount the whips on the bed the centers of a old mirror mount??.

I like the look of two and I know you gonna be running stacks anyways. It is funny to hear that "it is too 80's" when our trucks where built from 73-87. It is period correct..... HHAHHAHA

Re: cb antenna mounting decision

I prefer the look of two antennas, but the practicality of having one. I had dual 10-foot whips on my truck and switched to one when I mounted a two-foot fiberglass antenna on the roof of my shell. Trying to co-phase two antennas, even with an SWR meter, is a PITA. With the one antenna roof-mounted, the shell acts as a ground plane resulting in better than average radio transmission.

Re: cb antenna mounting decision

lol, me and my local buddies have been getting into cbs lately, ive got an old one in a 77 burb parts truck i may take out, or simply buy a newer one. I was thinking about doing the dual whips, but only having one hooked up, what does everyone think about that? would that help his situtation?

I was thinking about mounting mine right behind the cab, so it should really be offset if it goes over the top of the cab right?

I dont want to steal your thread, but i think this might help you get the best signal too.

If it is offset to one side of the cab your signal will be off as well. If you mount it dead center right behind the cab, I believe that would give you the best signal. But I am by far no pro here.

but if you mount right dead center you cant get the dual whips lol. I understand what your saying though, but if it has a good rise over the top of the cab, wouldnt it be like having a shorter one on top of the cab?

Re: cb antenna mounting decision

i'm as red as a redneck can get and the only reason he is putting the whips on is for his stereo thats what i got out of it. not a CB now think were does a regular antenna go passenger side front so him putting a dummy whip up won't hurt the stereo
