Howdy from Middletown Ohio, New here!
I just found this site today! I have a 70' Longbed half-ton 6-lug, 307 automatic that is black and in real nice driver shape.
I had two 68's in the past a 3/4 ton custon camper with 327 3 speed and a 1 ton dually flatbed that was show quality with a 327 4 speed. I would very much like to either lift the 2WD I have now or convert it to 4X4. A pre-runner desert truck like suspension with soft ride would rock... I have a small issue with my truck...The only problem it really has...The front marker lights wont work...The turn signals work and the 4 way flashers work but no running lights...Cant be the ground right? All I can figure is the power wire must be cut somewhere. The rear ones work fine. I also have alot of slop in my manual steering...Whats the best & cheapest way to fix it. I tried to adjust the locknut on the steering box but I couldnt get it to budge in any direction. Any clues? |

Is the Monte Carlo black? I think there is an exhaust of some sort coming out of the passenger side fender. I saw it awhile back if its the one I'm thinking of.

Yes sir thats my Monte....Black with a passenger side exhaust right through the front fender. I just got the car on the road in October. I've been building it since late 2006.
I was at less than 7# of boost until a few weeks ago....I turned up the fuel pressure and the car isn't leaning out anymore and its actually making 14# of boost now. Runs really strong. I have a few bugs to work out yet. The weather has got to go! I'm ready to get my car finished and get some work done on the truck too.

Huh, Trying to figure out how I know you? Westside of Hamilton cruise-in? Anyway...I found the shifting problem and the leak...The leak is actually the kick-down cable was split longways allowing fluid to pour out after it sits for a few hours and the level rises from the convertor bleeding back into the tranny.
The shifting problem is from Boost totally messing with the vacum modulator. I have yet to actually repair either problem. I have the parts just not the time or the weather. Too cold lately. Actually Bob Hamilton @ Springdale Automotive rebuilt the transmission...The leak was there before & after he rebuilt it....We found where it stemmed from after much frustration. So he is going to take care of that when the weather gets good enough to drive it sans salt. The shifting issue is more difficult to fix...It will take a little trial and error...I can use a diesel tranny modulator that is cable operated (Not cheap) and it will take some messing with to make it right. OR I can use a check valve to prevent the boost from going into the modulator and then drill a small hole in the line to let atmospheric pressure return to the modulator simulating a more normal WOT action to the trans. The hole in the line will be a metered vacum leak and wont be a problem during normal running because the engine pulls waaay over 20+" of vacum at idle without fail. The check valve and tiny hole drilled in the vacum line is very cheap and easy to do and shouldn't take more than a few minutes to complete. I have heard that a .018" hole is good for starters, to keep the air from getting trapped between the modulator and the check valve. I learned that the boost on the modulator made for a "very late/ if at all shift". Not good when your trying to load the motor to make more boost. It would just wind up and not shift...and when it did shift it was very lazy. I learned that winding it up and letting out of the gas it would shift, when vacum returned. So it does require a small amount of vacum in order to shift correctly. Not much but a little...SO the small bleed allows it to see diminishing vacum the same as a N/A motor being opened up. until full atmosphere returns to the modulator then it will see a WOT zero vacum situation. I am toying with the idea of running a small vacum ball in between the modulator and the check valve....Like the factory ball used on the HVAC controls. Then for the bleed hole I want to use a short piece of metal tubing with the small .015"-.025" hole in it for the bleed. I already bought the check valves from McMaster Carr products and they are a viton industrial nylon bodied check valve good for like 250 PSI. with less than 1 PSI needed to actuate the valve. Once its set up all I have to do, to get it to shift later is drill a slightly larger hole in the bleed tube if its not spot on to begin with.

OK, Yeah I took the car to 2-3 Cruise-ins over there. A kid rode along with me that sat by the car while I walked around...So I did only spend a few minutes talking to people about it.
Those were really just shake-down runs to get it out of my Garage in Middletown. It did fine except some minor fuel issues and the tranny of course. The Kid that rode along is a "Ford" person and really gave me a hard time about how huge that car is and that it wouldn't beat his buddy's Mustang...Then after his first ride along in it he shut his mouth. I still have to finish the wet sanding & buffing of the paint and finish putting all the trim back on.
