1 ton rearend swap options??
I have an Eaton HO72 with 4:10 gears. The truck is a dually with a flat bed. I intend on putting a Caddy engine in and want something with more highway friendly gears. Possibly in the range around 3:50 to 3:73 with a posi. I believe 14 bolt rears up until '86 or so are a direct bolt in, is this correct? Does it have to be off a dually truck or can it be a single wheel one ton. (is there a difference). Will newer rears fit? I could move spring mounts. Are they available with disc brakes? Any info or input would help.

I believe 73 and up dually rears are wider. I am not certain on that. That's about all I have to help.

Well...the 14-bolts started in`73 and that`s when the shocks started going one forward and one back. And,the spring pads are farther apart. Both easy fixes. The dual "pickup" rears are wide like a single pickup rear. The axles themselves iarethe same, just different lug studs, etc, for the dual wheels.A cab`n`chassis 14-bolt will be narrow.

Re: 1 ton rearend swap options??
There's actually 3 different widths,Tim. The dually pickup rearends are even wider than a 3/4 ton or 1 ton SRW trucks. If you put dually rims on a SRW rearend they will hit the wheel tubs. The cab and chassis rearends are actually closer to the width of the SRW axles, but are a little narrower. The dually pickup rearends are way wider than both. I found this out when I built my dually. I used a dually pickup rearend out of a '97 C3500, but I had to move the spring and shock perches. As you can see in the first pic below, the hub sticks out past the bed side on the dually pickup axle. If put a SRW rim on it, the tire would stick out the wheelwell. I almost didn't put the dual wheel flares on it and left it like the bottom two pics. It looked like a railroad truck with just the inner dually wheels on it!

Re: 1 ton rearend swap options??
I've got a 79 model cab and chassis 14 bolt rearend in my shop right now.
The spring pads are 40 inches apart, center to center.
