factory 396 in 71??
I didn't think the 396 was installed in pickups in 71. Spid clearly states 396. I thought the pickups all had 400-402 big blocks. I've been known to be wrong...

Re: factory 396 in 71??
From 1970 on they were 402BB's. But its not unusual to see the SPID read 396 verses 402. No 4x4 were avaliable with BB engines. If I am wrong someone can correct me.

Re: factory 396 in 71??
I agree with 70cst. It all depends on what the person behind the type writer decided to type that day. The SPID may have read 396, 400, or 402; but the engine was a 402.

The ad mentions a "big block specific cab" and "big block specific" high hump trans cover. ????

You make a good point...I think all the 402 were typed 400's. Anyone else with info on this?

Re: factory 396 in 71??
The big block specific hump part is referring to the removable tall hump that were used in th400 trucks so the trans would clear and not hit. Although if you have good bushings under the cab, a th400 won't hit anyways.
Not to hijack, but did napco do any conversions in this era on 1 ton big block trucks? I could swear I saw a picture of one, but don't remember.

The high hump wasn't for the TH400, it was for the BB itself. I have a SB equipped truck that came with a TH400 and it's a lowhump.

Re: factory 396 in 71??

Re: factory 396 in 71??
Yeah,NAPCO means 4wd.Yes,there could be such an animal.Whether there ever was,I can`t say.My`71 was a real basic C/30 conversion.It had a 307.

Re: factory 396 in 71??
My 71 is a late 71 (supers did not come onto the scene until April of 71) and it is listed as 400 on spid, not 396.

Re: factory 396 in 71??
my dad's friend had a 69 c-20 with a factory big block, and the engine displacement badge said "396", along with the spid.

Re: factory 396 in 71??
that would be correct 69 was the last year for the 396 in 70 they started the 400 even though the SPID would show 396 it was listed as RPO Code L47 which is the RPO code for the 400

Re: factory 396 in 71??
I have seen the high humps on 67-8 th400 trucks with a small block. So let me clarify my posting. All big block trucks(with automatic th400) had a removable high hump. All other th400 trucks had a possibility of getting one.(mostly 67-8s)

Re: factory 396 in 71??
My point was... there is nothing that makes a CAB "big block specific".

Re: factory 396 in 71??
this is true from what ive heard, since some trucks that are supposed to have a high hump have a low and vice-a-versa, it all depends on the attitude of the assymbly worker

Re: factory 396 in 71??
by the books, TH400 alone shouldn't have gotten a high hump... but then again, I had aGMC 1/2 ton 305/Th400... wasn't supposed tobe a high hump, but it was.
