exhaust on a six
I've seen other discussions here and there, but what is the best sounding exhaust for a six. At this time I am running a 250 bored 30 over with a 230 head. It has stock exhaust manifold (and 1 barrel intake). Running to a 2" (guessitmate) pipe through a turbo muffler. Sounds pretty good now but curious about other mufflers. Like to have more of a deeper sound with out the rice rocket buzz. Future plans do include some clifford goodies.

Re: exhaust on a six
When you get header if they are in you plans make sure you get shortys the long tubes hang way way too low. In my opinion the headers on my truck make it sound obnoxious and i was planning on going to a stock manifold with 2" all the way back and a turbo muffler this summer.

Re: exhaust on a six
I'm running a 292 in my '68 Stepside with Clifford headers [long tube, but they don't scrape the ground with a 292], Offy intake, Edelbrock 500 CFM 4 Bbl carb. The Cliffords are 3-in-2 set up, with dual exhaust, angled crossover tube, turbo mufflers, exiting aft of rear tires. Pipe diameter is 2" or less.
Sounds OK. And kind of a wildcat snarl at speed.

Well, it's not a 250, but this is my dad's 53 with a 235 with Clifford headers, 2.25" exhaust with Flowmaster Delta Flow 40's.

Re: exhaust on a six
My truck has a 292 with some Clifford parts and headers. It has a single 3 inch pipe with some sort of Flowmaster muffler that exits right in front of the left rear tire. That thing sounds awesome and is pretty loud. Those 6 cylinders sound really cool.

Re: exhaust on a six
That 235 with duals doesn't sound too bad, but a longer sound bite would have been nice.
When I was in school, the 230 engine had just come out ('63). Back then, we didn't care about an engine if it didn't have 8 cylinders in a V. But, one of the seniors at my school had a '55 Chevy that had a split manifold and was running one glass pack and one straight pipe. You woulda enjoyed hearing him wind it up and then let off of it. On my '96, the 4.3 has a single exhaust (for now). I had the stock muffler replaced with a Flowmaster wannabe. It's different, and gets some attention. However, the next step in this process is going to be to cut the catalytic converter off of it, and go with some stock exhaust pipes for a 305 (maybe a 350). Yep, checked the part numbers and it can be done with factory/aftermarket parts. Then, feed the exhaust into an X-pipe, and onto a set of Cherry Bombs. We'll carry the tailpipes to the back of the bed, but let them exit underneath the rear of the fenders.

Re: exhaust on a six
i had hedmans dual exhaust headders with 2'' pipe and 32'' glass packs and the pipes exited in front of the tires. the headers hung way low, and it sounded like a european car.

Re: exhaust on a six
I really like the split headers, with 2" pipe to a pair of smithy's mufflers. You can't beat that sound, had that set up on a 250" ford way back when, sounded like the 5o's (even though I was never there)

Re: exhaust on a six
you can do headers my chevelle had the regular manifolds cut out and made into duals and the mufflers were the blue streak glass packs and to bad they dont make them any more cause they sounded realy tough every one that i had a 350 under the hood and to there eyes was a big surprise when i poped open the hood there mouths just dropped cause i kept up with guys with v8 they beat me by a fender that was all thanks to the powerglide transmission.

Re: exhaust on a six
In 1963 I bought my first car. It was a 1958 Chevy with a newly rebuilt 235 six. A neighbor had a welder at his farm shop and his son offered to split my manifold and run duals for me. I bought Walker Continentals, they were blue and not as sharp as cherry bombs. That car had the sweetest sound I've ever heard. I opted to go fast and traded my car for one with a V-8. I still miss that sound.

Re: exhaust on a six
I'm using Clifford shorty headers and duals all the way back with an H-pipe and using Flowtech mufflers. It sounds really good and just the other day got another compliment.

Re: exhaust on a six
I got Clifford's truck headers on mine(Long Tube), with a Y pipe flowing both into one 2.5" pipe, and that goes into a Hooker Aerochamber muffler.........Sounds really nice.
