Finally found a 292

I've been searching for a 292 for my Panel for quite a while, and I finally found one last week. It's a basket case, but it don't seem to have any cracks in the usual places.

The bores mike out at .030 over, but I can't find anythind on the pistons that say they are oversized-but I havn't looked real close. The crank has .020 bearings. So I have a couple questions: How much can you grind the crank? And how muck can it be bored?
One thing I thought was clever, the guy I bought it from had several motors in his shop, and they all were standing up on these:

Some kind of furniture leg or something, with a nylon pad and 3/8 threads so it can screw right into the bell housing bolt holes. Makes it a breeze to slide it around on a shop floor without scratching up the floor.

I need to get this block down to the machine shop and have it inspected before I make too many plans, but the general plan is to have a supercharged 292 in my Panel when it is complete.

They have been bored .0100 over to fit 307 pistons.

Tell ya what stllookin,-drive ol' lamont on out here and we'll swap the 6 for that 327 I have that came out of a 50th, and then you'll still have those new tires!

We could even have a conversation about the TH400 that goes with that 327 and that posi in lamont.

J/K... I'm currently not blue, so I can't be making any offers like that.

I must have not looked close enough-the numbers on mine seem to give a fairly broad range of years, like '62 to '70 something. I'll know more after it's cleaned up better.

Well, the 292 has the same bore as a 250 and 230...which is the same bore as a 283 and 307...3.875.

the only issue is the wrist pin height in relation to the rest of the piston. Which is why the 230 and 283 uses the same piston, and the 250 and 307 use the same piston. Sadly, the 292 is pretty SOL when it comes to off the shelf pistons.

That aside, they can take a .060 over bore safely, with .100 to .125 if the block is checked. To my knowledge anyway...someone can correct me if i'm wrong.

Other than that, I love the idea of a 'charged 292. Forged pistons with a 8.5-8.75 ratio should be just what the doctor ordered for some boost...

Re: Finally found a 292

If it's indicating .030 over, it's most likely been rebuilt once. No problem as long as the magnaflux test shows it's all OK. Next stop is .040-over or even .060-over. There's still a lot of meat on those old blocks.
STD=292
.030=296
.040=298(?)
.060=301
What vintage is your engine? You can tell by the casting numbers on the drivers side and also the stamped numbers aft of the distributer hole.

Re: Finally found a 292

Back when my 66 step was my dd,I was in the middle of a road trip and happened across a fella at a gas station that was filling up his beat up ol 64 fleet.He grinned ear to ear when I pulled in beside him and we got to talking of course.I gave him a quick run down of my beater(nothing special to anyone but me) and when I was done,he led me around to the front of his hauler and popped the hood.There it was,a supercharged 250.Hadn't heard of it before or since....till now.
Very cool plan can't wait to see the pics!

Re: Finally found a 292

292's aren't all that hard to find...I have 3 of them...

and most parts interchange with the smaller displacements.
