Hmm was just wondering can headers be run with the 1bbl carb and stock intake? Just block off that lower port? anyone done it before? Ive read the exhaust is the thing choking these motors the most.
Also exactly where are the block numbers by the distributor of these motors? can someone show a pic? Id hate to think I've found a 250 only to be 230 or worse a 194. and finally is 66 the last year of the scribed cheverolet valve cover?

I tried to run headers and block off the port, but there wasn't enough room with the integrated head....You can find a non-integrated head, and then get a Clifford or Offy intake, and then run headers....
Maybe someone else will chime in if they had any luck doing it.

can someone show me where the casting numbers are located? I cant find them by the distributor.

One thing I keep reading about when putting headers on the straight six is to use something to heat the floor of the intake manifold to keep the fuel from puddling. Check out the Inliners site, Clifford Engineering, and Leo Santucci.
And it's not just the exhaust, its the head too that doesn't breath as good as it can with some modifications (removing head bolt bosses in the siamesed ports). In addition to headers, Find a used Offy or Clifford intake manifold, a small 4bbl carb or even a 2bbl, and USE AN HEI distributor. That will wake up the L6, wether it is a 230, 250, or 292. good luck.

And telling a 230 from a 250 is impossible to me...and some block casting numbers were used on both motors. I've heard the 230 uses a flat top piston, and the 250 uses a D shaped dished piston like the 292. Pull a spark plug at top dead center and see if you can tell which piston it is.
If you can find a 292, that is the engine to have; a stroker = ton of torque. It's easy to spot with its tall deck/6" high lifter covers, different engine mount location/ fuel pump location. Again, good luck.
