Nasty new truck with pics
Here is a new project truck I got yesterday. It's a 72 with a 350 engine/350 trans. It looked better in the pics the previous owner sent to me. When I got there we couldn't get it started, it's been sitting in a while, last registered in 06. The engine turned over, it just wouldn't start. I'll tune it up and see what happens. This is going to be a SLOW project, just fixing stuff it needs as I go. It needs quite a bit of body work. The PO riveted and screwed replacement panels on! Good thing is I only spent 500 bucks on it and it's got 4 brand new Goodyear Wrangler tires and new exhaust.
Now get this. The 72 I used to have that I sold to buy my house was at a car lot today. You know the type, crappy cars-pay as you go type thing. Well I stopped and talked to the lot owner and he said the enging was locked up. He thinks they are going to trade it in for something that runs. I told him it used to be my truck and I want it back and to call me if he gets it. I might hunt down the owner and see if they want to trade my running 72 for theirs. Wish me luck on that. I really want that truck back! Anyway, here's pics of the truck I picked up yesterday Last edited by sjarrett71; 01-31-2009 at 07:25 PM. |

Re: Nasty new truck with pics
Yeah, I'm not REAL happy with it but I should be able to get it running fairly cheap.

Re: Nasty new truck with pics
Is the grill is as good looking up close as it appears in the pics? Looks like a score to me.

Re: Nasty new truck with pics
For $500, I'd say you did pretty good..
Is that a "volt-a-drop" (used for hooking your 6V trailer to your 12V truck) on the left inner fender?

Quote:
Back to the "volt-a-drop". American vehicles changed from 6V to 12V electrical systems about 1956 (VW waited 10 years). If one had a trailer older than '56, it was all 6V. For the lights, the change was no problem, just switch to 12V bulbs. But for some reason, and I don't remember what it was, brakes and maybe a few other trailer accessories weren't that easy to convert. In steps the "volt-a-drop", which is basically a ballast resistor. It just drops the tow vehicle's 12V to 6V for whatever needs 6V in/on the towed vehicle. It certainly wasn't rocket surgery. "Crude, but effective" would be a better way to describe it. I hope that helped ya a little bit. El Jay

Re: Nasty new truck with pics
I probably will move the spare as it looks like an old person truck with it like that. I'm old but not that old. Also I'm kinda bummed out they cut all the a/c lines and took the compressor out.
One more good thing about the trip was the woman I bought it from made us home made spaghetti while we were loading it on the trailer. Can't beat that with a stick! |

Re: Nasty new truck with pics
Im digginn the pvc valve on the heater hose for a shut off. Still looks like a 500 well spent. If its not rusted under the patch panels. Just weld them in. He has done the hard part.

Re: Nasty new truck with pics
I'm sure I'll find a lot of little "modifications" when I start tearing into it. I can't wait but I think I might die first because the wife is going to kill me for bringing more "junk" home

It does, thanks! I'll take better pics of it tomorrow in the daylight and see what markings it has, etc.

Re: Nasty new truck with pics
Is that heat blocking tape on the spark plugs or aluminum foil? Kinda hard to tell. When it comes to rigging something together, you just can't beat some of these previous owners. Mine used to have a gas valve, some fittings and small pipes for the heater shut off. I'm still finding wires that are spliced 3-4 times in different colors. I think that truck looks great for $500. Now back to the doghouse before my wife sees me wandering around!

Re: Nasty new truck with pics
Great news!!! I went and got a new battery, a negative battery cable, and primed the hell out of the carb and the truck fired right up!!! WOOHOO!!!
By the way, that is aluminum foil on the spark plug wires. It was also in the connector for the coil/wire. I pulled the cap off this morning and everything looks brand new inside. I also found a couple maintenance receipts in the glove box. In 04 the owner spent 500 bucks fixing a bunch of stuff. A receipt for the tires were also in there and only cost about 77 bucks a piece. I couldn't believe it. The owners manual was also in there. |

Re: Nasty new truck with pics
Since my A/C lines are cut, some of the bracketry and the compressor are gone I was thinking about getting an a/c delete cover. Has anyone used them or have any opinion? Just looking to clean up the engine bay a little bit when I get started on this beast.

Re: Nasty new truck with pics
Definitely not as good as the first pics showed. But not bad for the price. You were able to talk her down? Let me know if I can help out with anything! And my truck looked alot better in your driveway and you never drove it!

Scott, I'm glad to see that you brought that thing home. Now let's keep our fingers crossed and you might end up with your old truck again.
Not bad for $500!
