Re: Winter Beater! New toyota truck
Looks like you could use some studded snow tires and 4x4. But not bad of a truck. Those Toyotas are reliable. I dont know how much you can carry in the bed ?

Re: Winter Beater! New toyota truck
I have a 70 mile one way commute every day. I have run one tercel to 275000 before I sold it(its still runnign). I currently drive a paseo that has 233000 on it and runs great. I have looked for a small truck like yours, but not to many are out there. Just wondering if you could keep me posted on the gas mileage you get with it. I get around 35 with my paseo and I always wondered if you could get the same out of a little truck like that.

Re: Winter Beater! New toyota truck
My very first truck was a 1980 Toyota SR5 and I loved that truck. I was a stupid teenager, like most, but no matter what I put that truck through, it just kept going. Better than the Energizer bunny! Great find!

Re: Winter Beater! New toyota truck
Those trucks cant be killed they will run forever, I have had a few of them, you will be surprise how much you can carry with it. The gas mileage in a 22r is around 30pmg in highway driving. All you have to do is oil and filter change and it keeps going.

Re: Winter Beater! New toyota truck
I have an 07 Tacoma. They, the dealership, have already had to replace the right rear axle, bearing and seal. Truck has 45000 miles on it. You know right after the 36000 mile warranty went out. After me bad mouthing them and telling them that I had a 40 year old CHEVY with still the factory parts in the rear. They fixed it under the power train warranty. 850 dollars worth. Good trucks, but never as good as my 68.

Re: Winter Beater! New toyota truck
I've been looking for one to use as a beater FOREVER, but i wont settle for a 2wd and i wont pay $3000 for a 25-30 year old truck that has been beat its whole life, maybe i am too picky. Looks like a good buy.

Re: Winter Beater! New toyota truck
My first Toyota truck was the same body style (an '82) but with a long bed. It had the diesel engine and a 5-speed. I gave $1000 for it when I bought it, kept it for 2 years and sold it for $2000...over the phone. The buyer drove 3 hours to get here, and didn't quibble an iota. Said it looked just like I had told him it looked.
It didn't have enough power to pull a sick whore off of the toilet, but it would try all day long and still knock down almost 40mpg.

Re: Winter Beater! New toyota truck
I had an 83 4x4, and it was a super truck. The only complaints I had, was in 83 it had a lemon 5 spd transmission. I had it rebuilt three times, since 3rd gear bearing would burn out.
The timming chain guides are a weak point to, but I think that was part of the scheduled maintenance items. I didn't replace mine as per Toyota's recomended mileage, and it failed and caused havoc to the engine. Luckily I was only going down my street when it happened, so there wasn't to much damage to the valve train. Sold the 83, and got a 86 4-runner 4x4. That was a POS, and traded it in for a 96 Tacoma. That was a great truck but had a hard previous life, so I sold it and got a new one. I now have an 02 Tacoma TRD SR5, v6, 5spd, extra-cab 4x4, and that truck is a solid runner. Gets 24 mpg with 31" tall tires, but thats because it's running 4:56 gears. Recently when I was moving using my 02 Tacoma, I towed a trailer with my Harley, gun safe, engine parts, roll away tool box, and a whole bunch of other heavy stuff. I had to drive a mountain road to get to my new house, and the truck did a great job the whole trip. They are small and light, so they are not all that great on icey roads. But then what is? I have done many a 360 spin out on black ice with my yota trucks. I'm not a big fan of the new Tacoma's, since now they are just to big for what the HiLux and Tacoma's were famous for.

Re: Winter Beater! New toyota truck
My first truck was a 79 Chevy Luv 4x4 with 4cyl... took me 5 years (being a dumb teenager) to finally kill that Isuzu 4cyl. Rebuilt it then the shop screwed me (rebuilt it but never ran right and he claimed to fix it would take more money when I already paid $2000 for a fully rebuilt engine) and I lost it because of his damn mechanics lien when I said he will fix it for no more money or I am taking him to court. In the end he sold it illegally to some junk yard for $500... but no title so the junkyard gave me $800 for the official title and that was the end of it... I was going to take it back since it was rightfully mine but decided against messing with all the crap and settled for the $800 back

Re: Winter Beater! New toyota truck
Everyone needs a winter beater. Mine happens to be the '87 V30. I bet yours gets better gas mileage. In today's economy, that counts for a lot!

Re: Winter Beater! New toyota truck
Not if you live where I do
I've owned 3 different 86 toy 2wd trucks, all 22R 5 speeds. I'll never own another one. Congrats on the purchase, keep it maintained and it should be fine.

Re: Winter Beater! New toyota truck
Great trucks! I had a 2x4 short bed '80 I bought new just out of high school for $5900. Lasted me 17 years and 239,000 miles before the New England road salt rotted the frame and the gas tank almost fell out from under it on the way to work one morning. 20R engine and 4 spd, Headman header , turbo muffler and 2" exhaust got me about 27-28 mpg. Did great in the snow with about 500 lbs of weight over the rears, but I always had carb icing problems when the temp dropped below 15 deg F and I forgot to add isopropyl.

Re: Winter Beater! New toyota truck
I was looking through the local Pensacola craigslist and they have two Dodge D50 4x4s for $2400, one is for parts... unfortunately once my burb sells I am looking for a Jeep CJ, YJ or Wrangler... but they want minimum $3000 for the junkers here...

Re: Winter Beater! New toyota truck
People have not come to the conclusion yet that in the depression our country is in that what they own isn't worth twice what they gave for it a year or two ago. Just sit tight, and you'll see things change quite a bit in the coming years. I see a repeat of the 30's coming, and I'm not alone.
