I just finished rebuilding my steering column for my 77, just thought I'd share some pics. Basically completely disassembled it, sandblasted and repainted everything, cleaned all electrical connections, cleaned out and re-greased all bearings and moving parts.

Wow, what a difference!

Did it take any special tools to get it back together? On a scale of 1-10, how would it rate in difficulty?

Looks really good. Thats a job that many of us dont tackle. Mine needs to be rebuilt, the tilt mechanism is getting sloppy. Did you use a kit to rebuild it?

You can take the wheel, lock plate and the signal switch out and tighten up
two of the three bolts that hold the pivot part of it. (GM should have put
loctite on those bolts)
You will need a 1/4 drive with a long ext. and a torx bit on some years.

Did you use Captain Mogan to get the spooge off of the steering wheel?

You got any more pics of it broken down?

Wow that don't look like so much fun. Turned out pretty sweet though I think. I need to get mine done too want to do it lol jk bud. How long and hard was it to get it all done?

I wish I had taken more pics, I have a few other angles and this pic of the steering u-joint thingie, for a lack of better terms, disassembled and starting to be re-greased.

On a scale of 1-10 Id say 4 maybe, it really wasn't bad. I didn't have to replace any parts everything was just dirty and rusty, and as far as special tools you need a lock-plate compressor, and steering wheel puller. I bought both a few years back...WELL worth the money. You should have a pivot pin puller, to pull the pins the column pivots on when it tilts, but I rigged up a quick puller with an old socket, the right size screw and nut. Oh yea, and you need an E8 torx SOCKET.

I actually used Purple power, not the Captain to clean everything(cept for the rust,sandblasted that). I did use some Cafe Patron to calm my nerves though...lol.

Nice work on a project most of either will walk away from or just tolerate the sloppy steering column. You should take pride in your accomplishment!

Anyone who wants thier tilt colunm repaired just give me a holler, I'll do it for ya. You have to pay shipping both ways and give me twenty five smackers and your good to go. 33 years as a Chevy mechanic. I actually enjoy doing them. jim

I actually enjoy doing them. jim __________________ 1984 K20 350M engine with 465,000 miles. Well, it's finally done!! Almost 2 years of work, but it was really worth the effort. Little stuff left to do is mount winch, wet sand & buff out and build belly pan\running boards. Body work takes lots and LOTS of beer!!!! God, Guts and Guns made America and God, Guts and Guns will preserve it! The worst thing you could do is get into my sights, but that don't matter, you'll never know it, cause you'll never hear the shotJim or Paladin whichever you choose.
