"Truck wouldn't Turn OFF" Need Help
Ok guys I know this was coverd before But I can not seem to locate the thread. Heres my problem I fired up the beast today I knew I had a problem as soon as I hooked up the battery The Electric Fuel Pump & Electric Water Pump came on But I decided to try to start it anyway. After a few putt putt backfire and a louder backfire and a small fire on the Carb It was ok notthing was hurt... Then I tried again putt putt and it fired up after a year of sitting in the garage I changed the Altanator wireing and Cleaned up the Wireing under the hood. But when I turned the Key to turn it off it wouldnt turn off I pulled the Fuse to the Fuel Pump and disconnected the battery then it slowlly turned off. What did I do wrong with the wireing any Ideas of where I should start Trouble shooting?
Thanks everyone I am running a 454BBC MSD Dizzy My altanator is a 10SI Internal Regulated model. I am useing the stock wire harness undre the hood and a Painless fuese block under the hood to power my Fuel Pump, Water pump, and Electric Fans hope this info helps....

I don't know if i'm just re stating what you said but by your fuel pump turning on when hooking up the battery its not tied in to your ignition. so to correct your problem you need to wire your fuel pump to an accessory that only has power when the ignition is turned. (like how some radios turn off with the ignition and some aftermarket units are wired to run with the car off and must be turned off)

Some wiring issues are hard to analyze especially if you did some rewiring. In this case I'd start with mechanical possibilities.
The way you describe it, it could be the float/needle valve not shutting off the fuel supply? I've had that happen before. |

Re: "Truck wouldn't Turn OFF" Need Help
If your running an hei, im assuming its wired up "stock" to a start/run connection. This would mean that if the water and fuel pump were wired to constants the engine wouldnt run b/c it would be getting any spark. Id go over the added wiring to make sure it is correct. If it is i had a similar problem once with an ignition switch, BUt the key wouldnt come out of the ignition either, and the car wouldnt turn off at all.

to both the fuel and water pumps you should b running them off relays/ the altenator wiring is probally the problem of not shutting off because its backfeeding into your ignition circuit
first thing you should do before burning your project to the ground is get a book on the proper safe way to wire a hotrod // summit jegs speedway motors all have a selection of wiring howto books

I agree with CDowns, if the alternator is the ONLY thing you changed since the last time you drove it, and it didn't do this before, your alt. is supplying voltage to the ignition system after you shut the motor down. Summit sells a relay and wiring kit solely to prevent this problem. Looks like a nice kit, comes with everything plus instructions and will set you back about $45.
