Anyone install their trim with tape? Almost all new cars have the trim taped on, is there any reason that it shouldn’t be done to our trucks?

I bought lower woodgrain trim from GM in 1990. In some areas, they provided clips with a 3M adhesive backing. I never could get them to adhere well, and I wound up using the standard "all metal" clips. Of course that was 1990. I'm sure adhesive products have improved since then.

As I recall some of mine were a mixture of the tape and metal fasteners. To be honest the tape seemed secure enough but I didn't like how far it stood off the body surface.

Did my Blazer's trim with 3M's tape.

I reuse the original plastic GM clips, and buy the adhesive tape by the roll from 3M.

Thats actually how most everything is helf on now, since the mid 80's manufacturers have been using double sided tape to attatch molding, trim and emblems.

there is a differance in 3m tape. its defined by the color and i think the gray is what you want for this application

Good to know.
I think what I used a few years ago was red, but maybe the part that peeled off was red. In any case I'll be buying new stuff and I'll check on that color you mentioned-don't need my trim falling off during the first rain storm.

I've used the 3m tape on occasion, and I've found that if you wipe the area with some rubbing alcohol prior to applying the tape, you'll get a good strong bond.

Why not just use the clips ? They held the trim on for 30 yrs...+ you Can remove them without bending the trim up and having to clean all the residue from the tape off if you ever repaint or repair any parts.

i used 3m tape on my trim for my lower of my bed..held strong with no problems

the factory used tape to apply trim on my 87. Most of the trim is still on there. All of it would be on if it hadn't been caught on tree limbs and such. the only thing is that it creates a place for water to sit and rust the metal. on the places where the trim has come off on my truck, you can still see the adhesive and pitting where the water sat. but the same could be said about the holes and clips. my metal cab trim below the back window on my 69 caused areas to rust, so it's a toss up. the tape should hold excellently though. Trim is just an accent, so who cares how it's applied? It's not like you're trying to use bondo to make a fender.

One other point, what if you end up changing your mind about the trim at a later date? Adhesive will be a lot easier to clean off than holes will be to weld up. Just a thought.

My trim was already fitted with a combo of the original metal clips and the tape, and when I needed to replace my damaged trim the replacement trim came with new adhesive strips and they have not held as well as the stuff I had to remove. And as has already been mentioned the adhesive pads held the trim to far off the body for my liking. I'd say the tape would be fine if you don't want holes in the body where there were none to begin with but it would be real important to get the best available tape out there, imagine the wind getting behind it on the freeway and tearing it off....what about heavy duty Velcro?

BobbyK, can you tell me what the ID is on that 3M tape? I work for a wholesale distribution company. We buy directly from 3M almost every week and I wanted to see if its something I could get a sample of to experiment with.

My Dad worked for 3M and he got that large roll at the Company store extremely cheap.
It came in a plastic bag with no product numbers on it.
I do know they sell it in 5' rolls in the parts stores for around $8.00 bucks.
