Re: GM two barrel carb rebuild

I've rebuilt them in the past with the kit from the auto parts stores. It's really pretty simple to do. You just have to make sure that you don't loose the parts as you remove them and remember or keep a record of where you removed them from. These days a digital camera is a great tool for keeping track of levers, small springs, bellcranks, etc.

I've never see a step by step procedure here on this site but here's a gentlemen that sells one on ebay pretty cheap if you need one.

Re: GM two barrel carb rebuild

I'll second the take a few photos before you take it apart thing.

I've rebuilt a lot of them and they usually take well to a rebuild.

Read and follow the instructions and make sure you do each step of the instructions.

You need the carb number to get the correct kit and they don't cost much. You should be able to pick up a kit for under 20.00.

I have used the spray carb cleaner to clean carbs when I redo them but it works a lot better if you soak one in a can of carb cleaner. I'm not sure what the gallon size bucket with basket in it costs now but it will do several carbs and can also be used to clean small parts on occasion. You just soak it for a couple of hours in a new can, longer in the older stuff and then rinse it off well after you take it out of the cleaner. Being careful of course to not loose any parts

It might be worth it to pay one of the local shops to clean the carb for you. If you are friends with a mechanic you can probably get him to clean the carb and rinse it off for five or ten bucks. That should be cheaper than buying a can of cleaner with the basket in it.
