edit:
sorry for the link,
I recently did my 1988 Chevy C3500 2wd.
First I bought a "pickle fork", ball joint press, heavy hammer.
This is what I did.
-take wheel off, take brake cliper off & tie them safely.
-take outer tie rod off the spindle
-remove ball joints and press in.

hope the videos help

Re: Ball joints????

There are good instructions in the "garage" section of 73-87.com

Basically you need a press for the lowers. You can buy one at Harbor freight for $40-$50, or most auto parts stores loan them out. If yours has "hogged" the hole out like mine, there is an oversized one available.

The upper, if original, is riveted in. You'll have to torch, grind, or drill out the rivets. The replacement bolts in.

Of course, you have to remove them from the spindle as well. there are instructions for that on 73-87.com. It isn't my preferred method, but it will work. One of these days I'll write up the instructions I promised Jeff for the site over 18 months ago... :-(

Re: Ball joints????

Here's a couple of PDFs that I put together over a couple of years ago. The instructions are both over 1,000s of words long since they both include some pics.

Slon-
I tried to convert these instructions to HTML for Jeff, but for some reason, he couldn't read them. (I guess I should have reported this to Marc Andreessen. )

I can probably extract the text and images from those PDFs so that he can use them however he needs if it would help. If you want me to do that, PM me an email address to send them to. I don't have much time to spend on the forum any more, so this thread would probably be on the 10th page or something by the time I got back here...

Thanks for the offer, Slon. I actually have all the pics and text in (HTML) source code and they actually come up fine in my browser when I tested it, but Jeff had trouble with the source code and associated files when he tried to host them the 73-87.com site. We never did figure out the issue. BTW, I can certainly relate to the lack of time.

Back on topic,

Here's a past thread regarding the UCAs and the LCAs:
