Please help! Totally stuck with problem!

I have a 1970 chevy s/b and everything so far is new on this truck. I started her up the other day, let her idle and a few minutes later she just died! Was really odd and not usual. When I try to start up the truck it gets primed a little and will start up and then die when the gas burns off. For whatever reason gas doesn't keep going to to the carb. The odd part which i can't figure out is that the fuel pump is 2 months old, new fuel filter, hoses all look good, and I just put a brand new 600 CFM Edelbrock carb. I pulled the fuel hose off and put in a gas can and turned the truck over to make sure it's still pushin out gas and it is! I put it back on the carb turned the throttle over with my hand and it's spraying gas inside. For whatever reason it won't turn over and idle. Any ideas? Anything will help. Everything is brand new on this truck so i'm totally stumped.

I thought it was the carb because I had just got it, so instead of dealing with it and pulling it apart, I took it down and waranteed it out and put a brand new one on and its doing the same exact thing. If it is plugged how would I fix that?

I had a simular problem once. I had cracked rubber hose by the fuel tank so it was getting gas at idle but if not enough and would die.

Pull your plugs - they could be fouled and create such an issue - it sounds like you have fuel at the carb maybe just not enough spark
Check your ignition modual (I assume you are running HEI) as they have a habit of dieing and doing just what you describe.

The fuel sock in the tank could also be clogged. It's on the end of the pickup tube.I'm throwing this in the mix since you didn't mention anything about the tank.

I'd go with Panel. That sock filter in the tank can get really nasty. They are available through your local Chevy dealer (if you still have one). The part number is 5651705. It is listed as a filter.

Oh yeah....back in '75-76, I was laid off from my long-term employer and went to work pulling wrenches for Sears in the auto center. They put me on the return work vehicles. The shop foreman knew what he wanted done and since I got paid by the hour, it was no biggee to me.

Anyway, there was a '73 Mercury Montego MX Brogham that had a 429 and all of the attendant bells and whistles that had been in for a tuneup because the engine would die on the road, then restart after a few minutes and run for a few more before it died again. The foreman had me to rebuild the carb, do another points/plugs/ignition system tune on it, new fuel filter and such before I ever got to road test it. But, when I did and I saw what it did....in rush hour traffic.....I knew what I had to do. I finally made it back to the shop, dropped the tank, pulled that sock off of the pickup tube and tossed it. The car never came back for engine tune problems.

It can be a puzzling thing, but once you have it resolved, you'll be happier.
