Idea for future suburban project

For my next build, I want to do a suburban. I'm debating on whether to go 2wd or 4wd. I obviously like the low look of the 2wd, but I like the practicality/go anywhere that a 4x4 offers.

I'm also going to set this up for pulling, so 3/4ton running gear. I was kinda thinking to get the best of both worlds, using a later model 3/4 ton front suspension (IFS) and lowering that. Has anyone on here swapped in a 4wd IFS into a 67-72?

BTW I'm it will also be diesel powered (may depend what I can find, maybe a cummins, 6.5L, or Duramax)

Anyways, I'd like to here thoughts/concerns about the 4x4 IFS swap and picture/details if anyone has done it.

I doubt many have done the IFS 4X4 into a early truck.The late model guys building trucks for off road use tend to convert to solid axels.That may make a IFS easier to find and afford but Unless you're going offroad your probably wasting effort.

I have '97 K3500 parts truck that came with a 6.5TD and 4L80E,, and I thought about that swap too, but the frames are some much different that I think most feasible solution would be to find a rolled over, but still running 4 door (ext cab may work?) K2500 (or Dodge if you want the Cummins) and put the the 'Burb on the chassis. You would probably have to cut the frame to get the right length, but I see no way of putting in the IRS set-up without cutting the frame and mating it to the 67-72 frame. Even then, the later frames are so much wider that it would be a funky transistion.

Real 4x4s dont have IFS, Just my opinion, I have owned both kinds and the sraight axle wins hands down, now if you are talking about AWD like in an astro minivan or an Eagle Talon the IFS is alright, No self respecting wheeler "puts" IFS under there rig. use the stock frame, and put a dana under the front, I prefer the 60's

For a hardcore off-roader I totally agree, but for a mostly street driven truck that sees some off-road use, I'll take IFS any day. They ride and handle better than a straight ever can, and if used on for trail use, they have a lot more ground clearance.

Ackattack, I think you are right about the Dodge having a SFA.

I thought of using an entire different frame. However, does the Dodge 3/4ton trucks have IFS? I thought they had solid axles. But I'm no Dodge expert

IFS works just fine for slippery roads, and it ride nice and smooth. I have ideas about a burb with IFS.

Regardless of which direction you go, burbs are awesome.

You might need two, a 2wd and a 4wd.

Yeah, i know for wheelin that straight axle works better (I'm looking into getting another jeep too ) A suburban is WAY WAY to big to do any kind of wheelin in these parts (heck my old grand cherokee was almost to big for some trails at times)





I'm going to lower the 'burb with 4wd IFS I mainly think I want it so I can go over the passes and what not whenever I need to.

I understand what you mean. I use mine a little differently, IFS is alright, just not my cup of tea. and on a Suburban seems like alot of extra work for such little extra comfort and ride, I just thought that welding in a crossmember or spring perches would be alot easier that frame swap.

This is what I use my 4x4's For. J's, "The Small Construction Company" The '04 6.0 was mine, until I replaced it with a 2500 HD (I now have IFS ), The '99 7.3 Flatbed has 263,000 on it, almost all with my dumptrailer on it's ass, 8-10,000 pounds loaded right!!

i think finding a complete roll-over d-max truck and putting the body on that frame would be the way to go for the ultimate DD/tow rig. even with some minor w.b. changes, i think it would be way easier to do the body swap rather than graft in the ifs to the early frame.
