Texas law still stands as requiring a motor vehicle to have 2 license plates. There is no exclusion for antique or classic autos needing to have only one.

Really? Then why is it that when I registered my 79 Malibu in Travis Co. Texas as an antique, they only gave me one plate? My dad has his 71 GMC registered as an antique in Texas and used original 1971 farm truck tags and mounted both because he had the pair. They told him if he was using original tags, he had to have both.

Re: Any one have Texas Classic Auto tags

Antique plates are for vehicles at least 25 years old that are used strictly for antique exhibitions, parades, and related activities. (Occasional trips to the repair shop are permitted.)

Only one antique plate per vehicle is issued. To apply for the plate, complete the antique application form and bring it or mail it to your local county tax office. The plate cannot be personalized.

however. Classic you do have to have two plates.

So "antique" lets you avoid annual inspection, but does "classic" get you anything other than a different style plate?

Re: Any one have Texas Classic Auto tags

Classic plates are also for vehicles that are at least 25 years old. However, vehicles with these plates may be used for routine transportation.

Complete the classic plate form to apply for the plates, and bring it or mail it to your local county tax office.

The plates carry an annual fee of $15, and may be personalized for an extra $40. However, local additional fees may apply. Find full information here.
Model Year Plates

Have the original, model year plates for a vehicle? As long as they're Texas-issued, have the proper color, and are in a usable condition, you may apply to use them by completing either the classic or the antique vehicle form, whichever fits the situation.

Bring the form and plates with you to your county tax office, where the plates will be inspected for suitability of use.

It costs $10 annually to display the plates, although local extra fees may be added.

So, based on your response and what I read on the TXDOT site, the classic plate get me nothing for the extra $15, but the added "Classic Truck" cursive on the plate? Changes nothing about inspection or anything else.

Re: Any one have Texas Classic Auto tags

The lady at the tag office informed me that classic and antique were the same thing......and can only be used strictly for antique exhibitions, parades, and related activities.

I'd like to find some '72 plates for my truck, but don't have a clue as to where to look. Anybody have the answer?

Re: Any one have Texas Classic Auto tags

You get different answers at different DPS offices. I asked a DPS officer, the guy thats going to give you the ticket, and he said one plate and only to and from shows, events and a repair facility.

Re: Any one have Texas Classic Auto tags

from what i understand you dont have to get inspection.and, its 15 a year for classic and 10 year for your of truck plates. i was told you pay every 3 years. so for 30 bucks i can have 3 years of registration. also i can get classic insurance on my rig.

Re: Any one have Texas Classic Auto tags

I would recommend plate from the year of the truck. I bought NOS plates off of Ebay for $50 including shipping. With these plates, you don't have to pay an extra $15 and can drive the truck with no restrictions.
