What rearends fit these trucks?
My truck (87 2wd swb) has the 10 bolt 3.08 rear. I really want some more pep so I am thinking about going with something like a 3.42 or 3.73. Do all the corporate 10, 12, and 14 axles swap to these trucks? Not sure if the 12 and 14 were offered for a 5 lug 2wd. I should be fine with a 10 bolt, my truck is not built and I don't beat on it.
Lots of used rears locally for sale, just not sure if they are all the same. Will something from say a firebird fit, just by swapping over my brakes and stuff or does it have to be from a 73-87 truck? Are 3.42 a good improvement over the 3.08 or should I really opt for a 3.73? I have the 700r4 and do a mix of city/highway.

Re: What rearends fit these trucks?
Have a 3.73 gear set ( ring & pinion) for sale on the parts for sale board.
To answer your question , with a 700r4 a 3.73 is ideal > very good launvch , & the 4th gear gives you good cruise rpms ( best of both worlds). With a 3 speed 350 trans. like in mine , the 3.73 is just too low for cruising , unless you have a tall tire 31- 34 inchesetc. so with a 3 speed a 3.42 gives you the best of both worlds > good acceleration plus decent cruise rpms with 27-29in tires. hope this helps dont know about your question about camaro rears > IREALLY DONT THINK THEY WILL .iM SURE SOMEONE ELSE HERE COULD TELL YOU FOR SURE |

Re: What rearends fit these trucks?
Your best bet is to locate an early GM truck 12 bolt or build a 10 bolt. Nothing else is going to "bolt in". All GM big car rear ends were 5x5 pattern, but I don't think any were 5x5 AND leaf spring AND the correct width. They may have been one of those, but not all three of them at the same time.
Slugish pretty much sums it up. 3.08 arent bad with a 700r4 and enough hp. Your better off with a 3.42. The 3.73's are a lot more fun, but you sacrifice the mileage.

No car rear ends will not interchange with these trucks. 3.42 will be a big difference over 3.08, your gas mileage will even go up. 3.73 would be even better.

Re: What rearends fit these trucks?
1990-1993 454SS truck rears are as closeto a bolt in rear that will offer 3.73(1990) or 4.10(91-93) gears and a factory posi . It is a 5 on 5 pattern also . Swap the studs with a set of lug studs for a 1973ish ford truck and you have the correct 1/2"20 thread pitch stud . Those rears used to be pretty common but are a little harder to find now days . A little creative searching might find one on the net though .

Re: What rearends fit these trucks?
Thanks guys. The 3.08 just seems doggy around town with all the hilly roads. Transmission constantly downshifting and upshifting, I don't even use OD around town unless I'm on the highway.
The truck does have some big tires on it now though, which could be a big problem (265/75/15). I plan on dropping to a 255/70/15. It's not a huge difference but it may help some. So I would be better off swapping a complete rear correct? Back when I had a 78 Ford truck, it had the 9''. All I had to do was find a chuck with the ratio I wanted, and swapped it in. I hear it's not as easy to do on a chevy rear? I do see gear sets for sale but I would have no clue how to set them up with proper backlashes etc.
