I'm stuck/need a little help with valve seals.
I'm working on my blazer. 1981 305. I'm changing my valve seals. The exhaust valve seals that they sold me at O'reily are nylon and don't fit. They simply will not go on without splitting. I went to another location and they tried to sell me the same ones. Autozone's look the same and don't fit. They show a different rubber exhaust seal for pre 81. So I tried those. They will go on, but don't fit securely on the shoulder of the valve guide.
Whats the deal? I tried the rubber intake valve seal on the exhaust side. It fits fine and fit on the shoulder perfectly, even though the exhaust valve stem is just a little thicker than the intake valve stem. I think I am going to get another set and use those unless somebody tells me it is a bad idea. I know on my mustang ther is no difference between the two, and can't think of a reason why it would matter. I don't think the heat difference would be all that great considering the other end of both of them is in the combustion chamber. Also, all of the replacement seals come with these little o-rings that as I understand is for the lower notch where the spring retainer clips go. That seems awfully wierd to me. Is that right? Thanks in advance.

Back when I was in the auto biz I don't recall a difference in the intake/exhaust stem seals, Unless they have changed I wouldn't worry about using the same on both. As for the O-rings, Maybe fig. 4 and 5 in the below link will shed some light;
