Clearance on the back of speaker?
How much clearance do I need on the back of my speaker? I changed out the speakers that came with my kickpanels (which were pure crap) and these are deeper - they are touching the metal of the truck. I know I am going to have to shim them, but how much room behind the speaker is necessary?

Re: Clearance on the back of speaker?
I am not an expert, but I would say as long as it is not touching; (especially the magnet) as this would create a rattle. I have installed subs in boxes with almost no clearance. I know the guy who owns the lombards in slo, if you want I can ask him.

Re: Clearance on the back of speaker?
Thanks, James - I guess I'll ask the guy here at their store in Santa Maria. I'm about ready to throw away the kick panels and just cut holes in the doors. I still have to deal with the e-brake clearance problem.

Yeah, just so long as the magnet doesnt touch anything you're ok.

Re: Clearance on the back of speaker?
I found out that there's no way to adjust the e-brake handle, and I don't want to grind off/cut off an inch of it so that it will clear the speaker when I release it - I think I'm gonna cut the doors. Any other suggestions?

Re: Clearance on the back of speaker?
I was going to build a new bracket for my ebrake pedal, but I've just put the idea on hold because I hardly ever use it...
You can cut the doors if you want, but I think you'll regret it later...

Personally, I would build my own kick panels. There is plenty of info on the web to learn how to do it. Quick one I found: KickPanels Many of the car audio specific forums will have tutorials on how to do em too. If you aren't that adventurous, just cut the doors. These trucks are very limited in their speaker placement options, so you have to do what works for you. (Of course I'm part of the cut the dash crowd, too)
