572 BB Crate Engine
Did anyone read about this monster in Hot Rod Magazine? I wondering how much this thing is going to cost. Might have to start saving now!

Ah, man I saw that beast. You can get it in one of two set ups. I think it was a 620 or a 720HP!! Incredible! I bet it will be in the range of $15K for that engine......

Brabra......you dont mind if I chuckle a little about that well built sb keeping up with that big nasty RAT do you? My guess would be that the sb better have a BIG blower on it to play! Im runnin a sb, & love them, but have had a taste of BB power........lets just say "once bitten"..........

I think it's the ZL1 (aluminum 427) you're thinking of which is limit to 200 units.

I mean to say built right a big block would prolly spank a small block. But if you took a small block and built it with the right compression, cam, and drivetrain, I just think it would run beside it. Small blocks are capable of making 4-5 hundred horsepower, and this one is what 602 or 672? Theres not that much of a difference. Also big blocks are notorious for torque, but not always necessarily horsepower, small blocks are opposite. I know this motor has huge horsepower ratings, but I just think built right, in the right application, say a Camaro, where weight of a car to weight of a truck would come into play, the underweight of the car should keep up with the big fat rat.

YEP -- A SMALL BLOCK WITH A BLOWER, IN A 1400 LB CAR WOULD PROLLY KEEP UP WITH A 8000 LB TOW TRUCK WITH A BIG BLOCK IN IT. ( I'M HAVING TROUBLE SEEING YOUR POINT) LOL

the aluminum headed big block weighs 100lbs more than a small block, that adds a tenth to the time of the quarter. To reach 650 hp, the max torque would be in the 5,500 rpm range and max HP will be at around 6500...plus it should have 400+ torque from 2000 on...for a small block to reach 500HP it would have the same rpm range, except the torque would not be there until it reaches 4000rpm...lol..now im rambling..ANYWAYS the big block will smoke a small block

Oh, I guess I'll just shut up. I guess I don't know what any real high horsepower engines run. I'm around beefed up cars at drags and crap, but never a 650 horse beast. Guess just thought since it was so big I guess it's kinda like the big and awkward thought. Pretty much anyone I know that runs worth a shiznit runs a small block. I don't really know the nature of the beast, just thought incorrectly. Sorry. I'm thinking I know more than I do. I am 15 ya know, we tend to do that.

Probably all your friends would run that beast if they were rich dudes- but in perspective, not many people have the $$$ to buy one of those beasts. Wonder how that would fit into my truck?

Brabra... a SB could keep up with that beast (in stock form) but it'd be built like a brick sh!thouse and would be a costly toy... the power and torque you get outa a BB is diff than a SB.
most people run built SB's because well its DAMN cheap... (comparatively speaking) versus building a BB.. with so many distrubutors of quality and bad arse parts for the 350 it's not tough to build em up stron and cheap.. a BB however with some nice mods (ie full roller valvetrain) can really wake up and still have a great usable band, specially for our trucks, whereas a really stout SB will have a lesser streetable quality... now what i wanna see with that Bad Boy is some specs cuz i dont know any on it other than bore and stroke... (is it all forged? i'd hope so) if so then slap some dish pistons in, and break out the turbos off a nice MAC truck.. that'd be one NASTY rat... muhahah ok i'm done now ehhe

That motor is WAY mild. I know it sounds like the cam and carb are big, high HP pieces, but on an engine that large, its barely adequate (defnitely needs a bigger carb). Not to mention the 9.6-1 compression. Id bet that engine would be livable day to day, if you could pony up the fuel dollars...
A 600 plus HP, normally aspirated small block, OTOH, would be very radical, nearly unstreetable. It could be done, with blowers,turbos, or big nitrous, but a Rat motor with that kind of hardware can easily be a 1000 HP piece. Further, when you start talking major HP (600+) the cost advantages of the small block start to disappear, as the economies of scale, start to diminish. For instance, a Scott Shafiroff Racing Egines, 434 makes 675 hp, and costs $11,250, while a 540 makes 835 hp, for the same money... Fix the heads, and a big block Chevy, is a damn impressive engine. -Marty '72 Blazer, 396/350, mildly built, 4spd, 3/4 ton axles (soon), 36 Swamper Radials (yech) PS: Reher & Morrison, Shafiroff, Bill Mitchell, and other sell big inch 'crate motors' for probably the same money as this thing will cost...eg. Shafiroof's 572 is $12,500 and belts out 875 ponies. |

There is no replacment for displacement!"cubic inches"But per dollar spent a 400 small block is a bad mouse.I have about $2500.00 in a 400 that I assembled with good parts , forged pistons ,arp bolts,comp cams valve train 186 LT1 heads 750 holley etc. Motor is in 69 swb GMC set back in 6 cylineder postion ,no power anything .1 belt for alt and water pump .Has electric fans.308 posi th350 with 24oo converter.Truck will chirp drive at 100 mph plus , hold you back in the seat and take you for the ride of your life!!!! I had 454 in the same truck with the same trans and gears .It was faster in the quater but I could make the 30 mile trip home on the back roads alot faster with the small block. With small block in 6 cyl postion and loprofile tires truck would take curves 20to30 mph faster.So unless you want to dragrace or just bragg about I think the mouse beats the rat.I think I'll spend my other $12,500 on a nice truck to put it in.

WHEN! ,they get around to offering this thing in a short block it will really take off.I think with some aluminum heads, a decent intake and the right cam, you could probably get close to 700 "streetable" hp out of it.With aluminum heads and the right cam combo you could probably run it around 10.5 comp.ratio.Use a 2500 converter and built 350 and drop it in a S10 and you would have a sure fire street beast if you could get it to hook up.

This engine will be offered in 2 versions. A 9.6:1 pump gas engine with 620 horsepower and a 11:1 720 hp version with the dominator carb. I would be suprised if the 620hp was priced too much higher than the Ram Jet 502. Still a lot of money but affordable as far as crate motors go.
