POR 15 VS. Powder Coat

I have a 68 Short Stepside and I am planning a frame off and I was wondering if I should go spend the money for the powder coat or paint the frame with POR 15 and a top coat of chassis black

Have you looked into Rust Bullet? Seems easier than POR15.

Just got my frame back from getting powdercoated, there is no comparison to por15. That stuff sucks in comparison.

POWDERCOAT ALL THE WAY!!!!!!

POR-15 is a PITA to use. Too many steps. I would vote for Powercoat if you have the $$.

It depends on what your willing to spend and what results your looking for. Por-15 would be a less expensive way of making the frame look descent if you want to do it yourself and save money. if you're going to send it out to be done than powder coat it,

If it is applied properly, por 15 is extremely durable. I have used it on Jeep frames for years, that see a lot of offroad use, and it does not chip or flake except under extreme circumstances, which will also happen to powdercoating

What are you guys paying to have a frame power coated?

Mine was $525, that was with them having to order a non-stock color, sandblasting and putting a clear coat on it. PLUS I had them do my leaf springs, crossmembers, traction bars and some misc brackets. I thought it was a steal. It all turned out beautiful, no corners cut!! I would recommed them to anyone. Matter of fact it is worth the drive for almost anyone within 4 or 5 hours.

When I am asked this here, I always think about what my time is worth. My employees will tell you that it is worth nothing. I agree most of the time. There is absolutly no comparison to the two. I will be taking my 72 Blazer off the frame later this year, and me and the local powdercoater will be BUDS before it is over. Lasts forever, and OOOh la la it looks so good. I powdercoated my last frame off, and the new owner never wipes it off, and it still looks good

Powdercoat is great until it gets scratched, starts to lift, and rusts from underneath the powder coat. POR-15 won't do that.

powder is great for a truck that'll live in the garage and not be driven every day.
POR is AWESOME for something that will get driven.

For anyone who thinks powder coating is all durable and stuff... go to a truck stop and look at the rear frame rails on every rig out there. Every single one of them used to be powder coated when it was new. That was new virgin steel... not 40 year old cleaned up steel.
I por's the rear of the frame on the longhorn back in 05 and it has been my daily driver since then. It has sat for a total of 5 or 6 months when I was driving the burb. This longhorn goes through rock salt, salt brine, goes all winder without getting washed... and when I clean it off... it looks great. No chips, no rust, no peeling, no bubling rust underneath...
POR when done properly (and I never even used the marine clean or anything) is awesome.

I used POR15 on mine. I also sand blasted it myself. The POR 15 was easy to do (I sprayed it.....read warnings). However I really wish I would have payed a little money to get the frame sand blasted. It took me hours and hours to sandblast it myself.

6600duramax where did you go i have been using a guy in herculaneum missouri for powder coat he is very reasonable and does great work

I have used PM Industries multiple times. Works just as good as POR-15 but cheaper. Doesn't chip, lift, etc. Great product. Powder coat is awesome for a trailer queen but as soon as it gets scratched it's all over.

I just ordered some of this tonight after reading your post. I really want to see how this stuff works! I need to spray my 71 Fleetside SWB Frame.

Im a fan of Powder Coating, looks really sharp. I got my frame, cross member and all suspension done for $500. It included sand blasting and they cover up the threads on the stuff that need it covering. One thing the guy that did mine recomended that if you scratch something just hit it with regular spray can paint, I got my frame done in semi gloss black, so a regular craylon spray can will do.

If you brush it on it is very high gloss and self leveling. Doesn't show any brush marks. If you spray it on it is not quite as high gloss but still very nice and has a nice shine to it still.

Hey Firedog I live in Festu s also, we will have to meet up sometime. The guy in Herky really wouldn't work well with me so I had Pro-PowderCoating in Jefferson City do it for me. Again it was a 3 hour drive each way but it was more than worth it. Pro-Powdercoat was awsome to work with, there phone number is 573-782-3842 if any one is interested.
