Short bed question.

I have aquired a shortbed frame and bed to convert my long bed to short. Is there any problems with the dmv about a different frame serial number, or how do I go about making it legit and not like I stole the frame. Any info will be awsome. I live in Texas.Thanks.

If you are planning on swapping your cab onto the short wheelbase chassis, then the VIN on the cab will still match your registration. The number on the chassis probably will not be checked. I doubt that anyone at the DMV or any of your local licensing stations will bother. If it is already registered to you, nothing will be changing. If it isn't, and you will be registering it, I don't think very many people at the DMV will know that the VIN says it is a LWB, while you know that it isn't. I'd be willing to bet that the registration is the same price for both long and short wheelbase trucks.

I think I read on here on someone elses thread, that some frames are number and some are not. I just bought a rust free lwb attached to a 71 rolling chassis for my 69 project. The 71 frame is numbered right behind the steering pump, if it was a factory stamping, it looks like crap.....the nubers are not evenly indented and are out of alignment. I don't know if the 69 frame is numbered or not, too greasy/rusty to tell. Here in MO, I could get a builder title by going to the hiway patrol, they are not concerned that the numbers don't match as long as they are not HOT! I doubt I will do that, just use the 69 title and cab.

the VIN doesn't say jack about the wheel base.
I would try to get and keep the title for the chassis donor myself. No one can say jack if you have the proper documentation.

LonghornMan, that's twice I've laid that egg.....thanks. I don't know what I was thinking.....unless my brain is thinking of the 17-digit VIN's and we both know that the '67-72's don't have 'em.

I've had a ton of cars and trucks registered here in texas. Never once has anyone checked a single number when I registered one. The lady at the courthouse isn't going to walk outside and look at your truck.

My shortbed used to be a 1 ton dually. It's now on a short bed frame. One time I got pulled over because the cop followed me and ran the numbers and the computer calls my truck a "1 ton utility truck". He wanted to know what the deal was. After he confirmed that the VIN plate on the cab matched the number it is registered under, all was well. He didn't care about the frame or wheelbase or even that it is now a 1/2 ton, as long as the cab VIN still matched my registration.
