My Dads Barn Find w/pics

Somehow we found a guy selling his dads old 72 GMC 1/2 ton on Kijiji. As usual it had only one pic and lots of hits. He was really hard to get ahold of and when we did finally get ahold of him we asked if he still had this old truck for sale. He did so we asked for more pics and he said he has quite a few calls on it but they never left a message or it was too far of a drive. So we got some more info and pics and hooked on the trailer and away we went. It was a good 2 1/2- 3 hour drive from home and when we got there he was trying to dig it out away from the side of the quonset. Lots of snow.

The story is his dad bought it new in 72 and drove it on and off till 85. Then his dad passed away from an accident and the truck was stored in the quonset till 95ish. Then he said he pulled it out and drove it for a couple of weeks and decided it really wasn't his thing so he put it back in the corner. Then up until last year he needed the space so he parked it beside the shed to make room for his farm machinery. Thats when he decided that he needed the money more than the truck.

Its a 1972 GMC 1/2 ton custom, 350, auto, around 95000 original miles and original paint. steel floor box, gauges,

The Spid is missing. The glue is there but the sticker is gone so I dont know what all options it has or if I can find out thru the serial number?

It needs rockers and cab corners and one small dime hole in the drivers floor but thats pretty much it for rust. it also came with jack and handle too.

I have always loves those barn find stories. If anyone has this color combo please post them so my dad can see how good this color looks. He wants to restore it. Heres some pics

Re: My Dads Barn Find w/pics

Looks similar to my chev, but nicer. GMC's probably had more standard, but it seems very similar. It looks like a low-buck model. I see that it has no brightwork around the windshield, or back window. Are the vent wings painted black instead of being chromed? It has standard knobs for the lights and wipers, but deluxe knobs for the radio, so it probably didn't come new with a radio. The radio knobs should match the other two. Looks like a clean solid truck except for the normal cab rust. Good find!

that just means it didn't have a high trim package i.e. Sierra Grande

my chevy is the base trim package (c10) but loaded with options AC, PB, PS, two tone, cargo lamp, tool box etc........

Very cool. Always nice to see someone find a survivor.
You might be able to get some info from GM in Canada, I've heard they kept better info than the states.
I bet the build sheet is still in the seat springs.

Nice GMC! Looks to be pretty well optioned. It has a trim package, radio, A/C, auto, so I'm also going to guess PS and PB?

He took the pics in the summer/late fall when he decided to sell it, Thats how long it was for sale. Were from the Edmonton area and the truck was locaded out by Lloydminster. I guess no-one wanted to drive that far.

Re: My Dads Barn Find w/pics

Yes you could be right on the radio since the knobs dont match the dash. It doesnt have the stainless trim on the windshild or rear window or the chrome vent window wings. I thought the Custom package came with that but I guess not( It is a Custom). It does have power brakes but no power steeing. It still has the dealer sticker on the tailgate tho, Thats kinda cool

I would guess that someone changing the windshield/back glass could replace the rubber and use the standard stuff, but what are the odds that both would have to be replaced, based on the overall condition of the truck. Maybe someone with a '72 Truck Data Book (what the dealers used to order new vehicles) can shed some light on that. I agree that the Custom designator for '69 shows that the bright trim came on the windshield/back glass rubber and that the vent wing upright was chrome, so having all of these in black kinda says it didn't ever have 'em.

Surely, there's a GMC dude who can offer words of wisdom.

Re: My Dads Barn Find w/pics

Nice find, It looks like the way it looked in 72, minus wear and aging of course. The paint color combo and trim level work well on your truck. Keep the metallic green tu tone and white bumper and wheels, it is a good contrast. These trucks could be ordered with just about any option, regardless of the trim level, it just dependend on how knowledgeable and expierenced the original buyer was.

Well got the seat out to pull the tank. the tank is all rusty inside so just might put a new one in rather than try and clean and seal the old one. The was no build sheet in the seat, too bad
