Re: steering column diameter & spline count
Hello Nigel,
I believe you'll have to remove the intermediate steering shaft to get your spline count...here's a pic of the intermediate shaft.....you'll need to count the splines on the steering column and the splines in the steering box....I think?!?!?...hope this kinda helps Mate!

I'm putting an early 70's G-Van column (3/4"-36 spline) into my 66 GMC. The Steering box in my 66 is a Sagainaw 808 (3/4" - 30 spline) out of a 79 C20. The intermediate shaft that came with the 79 looks just like yours, except it has a 1" DD at the top end of it, and a rag-joint coupling at the bottom end. Yours looks like it's 3/4" - 36 spline at the top, rag joint at the bottom? I really like that it's the collapsible style with the nylon pins. |

Here is my link to putting the tilt steering columns in my trucks. As stated 3/4" DD on the box end and 36 splines on the column end.

Re: steering column diameter & spline count
Thanks Geoff....your a pal. So is the intermediate shaft the flat sided one or is it the one that you have indicated in the second pic? I'm really dumb on this stuff.

Re: steering column diameter & spline count
Sorry Nigel....I meant to say...The intermediate shaft connects the steering column to the power steering box (so it's the whole shaft shown in pic 1)....So you would need to remove the rag joint at the pwr steering box first, then back the bolt off the collar at the steering column (as seen in the second pic) to remove....you'll need to wiggle it off....be patient!HA

Re: steering column diameter & spline count
Ok! I understand it better now. Getting that question from CPP threw me, the way they advertise it I thought it fit right on there...silly me for thinking things were that easy.
Thanks for your help mate.

Re: steering column diameter & spline count
Nigel,
I'd recommend getting a Factory Assembly manual too it looks like this....it runs $35-$40.....check with Wes I think he has some.... It has some very detail assembly pics that helped me out tremedously throughout my build!!! By the way, how'd your transmission fix turn out??

Re: steering column diameter & spline count
I'll pick one up.
Got the trans back the other day...going to update my original post and you can see how it came out. Basicly £400 on a general revamp of the Trans & £200 on a new Torque Converter which converts to about $850.

Thank you Kev, i'm going to take it apart and have a look as well, it will need to come out in the end to fit the new one anyway.
