Parts Don't Fit!

I am in the process of rebuilding my heater box, and I finally got my heater core today and came home to start assembly and the core doesn't fit! The "necks" are 1/4"-1/2" to wide and the heater box won't fit around them. Should I hold out and get them to re-send one that will fit, or just grind the box to make it fit?

Re: Parts Don't Fit!

I like to get the right part for the job, however, if it doesn't bother you that your heater box is modified, go for it.

A picture would help identify the issue, but I think I know what you mean. There were a few different sizes of heater cores and a few different styles of heater boxes, so you may have received the wrong heater core for your particular box.

Where did you get it and what type heater do you have in your '66?

Re: Parts Don't Fit!

I believe it is a thrift air. I recieved the part from LMC. The core is the right size, just not made RIGHT.

Here is the new..

and the old...

Just grind a little relief...it won't ever be seen anyway. You could go through a stack of new cores before you happened on one that fit perfect.

I'll be the first to admit I've licked a lot of things in my life, but not that.

Re: Parts Don't Fit!

I'm replacing my recirculating heater with a core from Advance Auto Parts. They had to order it but it was only $58, thats $30+ cheaper than LMC with shipping, and it fit perfect. Had it there the next day. Just figured I'd throw it out there for future reference sake.

Re: Parts Don't Fit!

Apache, thanks for the info, I'll try Advanced! I also noticed tonite that the stablizer bracket won't work either with the inlet/outlet being off so much.
