Transmission issues?
Its a th400, i have installed a new converter, street/strip shift kit, new seals, and filter. the converter is a acc 2400-2800 stall. I dont have the kickdown wires hooked up and the vacuum module is hooked to the intake manifold behind the carb. The issue im having is sluggish acceleration. I have get the engine to 4k rpm to really get it moving, but its still nothing spectacular. The reverse seems to be ok however because its responsive to the throttle. It does shift, but the shifts are anything from stout. Also if i step on the brakes and mash the gas it will power brake just fine and shift. And when the transmissions warms a bit it runs better. So I dont know where to go from here... thoughts?

Is a 24-2800 stall to high for a 350? I'm no expert on this, just throwing it out there.

I want aware of any hp requirement for a higher stall converter. However the 350 i built for this truck is producing 343 hp /446 tq @ 5k rpm according to desktop dyno. Furthermore standard converters are 1600 stall, so its just a smidgen over stock.

Do you still have your cam card? If so, see what requirements it calls for on a converter.
Also, if you have a 3.07 rear gear (standard on a small block/auto truck) then you'll end up burning up your tranny unless you cruise at 75+ MPH as the converter is advertised, or well over 100 MPH as the 4000 stall you are seeing in your combination. There are many many variables that dictate the stall, engine torque, vehicle weight, gearing, tire size, just about everything about the truck matters. You should stick to the recomendation of the cam maker, and then talk to the converter maker and see if you are ok to run it in your combo. (gears too high for example?) |

It calls for a 2500 stall converter and thats what i put in(2400-2800 is what its rated), my rear gears are actually 3.73, ill give ACC converters a call and talk them up abit. Should i give them my issues and see what they say or just tell them my setup and ask if it will all work ok. Also i am not completely sure its a part problem as much as a tuning problem, or since i have never fully tested the transmission i dont know if it worked well before i got it. I'll let you know what ACC says tomorrow. thanks. |

Well talked to the tech today and found out that what happened is i used their product cat. to pick the converter i needed, which they agreed that i picked the right one for my setup it was part number 46012, however they had just discontinued a converter with the same number and gave the new converter the same p.n. So when i ordered the part i got the old one instead of the new one like i was looking on that catalog. What i have in it right now would be equal to a 4800 stall converter . SO i guess thats gatta go haha, they did offer to swap me out with the converter i have to the one i need for 45 bucks plus shipping which is what im going to do.

yeah.... 5000 RPMs would not be the best for your combo! At least you guys figured it out.
