Re: Disk brake Conversion

You can swap the whole crossmember from a 71-86? and just drill a couple of holes. You can also do it by using the ball joints to match the spindles from the donor truck. There are quite a few threads on this swap in the FAQ's section which will give you tons of info. You can then best decide what fits you budget/skill set. We're always here to answer questions but there is more info in the FAQ's than anyone can repeat.Swapping spindles also requires swapping tie rod ends.If you're looking to upgrade to PS then a later crossmember may be the ticket.

Re: Disk brake Conversion

Just did a 77 front crossmember swap on my daughter's truck . In my opinion this is the way to go drill 2 holes and bolt it in simple . My 2 cents Bob

Re: Disk brake Conversion

If you do the complete crossmember swap, do you have to take the motor out? Seems like I remember that the perches for the motor mounts are bolted to the crossmember and frame on a 69.

Not trying to hijack a thread... just interested in doing the swap as to what all is involved.

Bob is it really that easy??? if you swap out the front crossmember will you have to swap out the rear also? or will the crossmember be the same width as the original????

Width is the same I will be using a 72 rear and yes it is easy . The truck is not driving yet but not because of the front I have it tore way apart . If you go to projects and builds and look at Sweet 16 and you can see it with the new front end in it . I think it took me about an hour to bolt in the new front end and drill the holes . I would say it's easy . Bob

Re: Disk brake Conversion

I rebuilt the front end on my 67 about 500km's ago & not wanting to throw away all that cash, I decided to get me some of those drop/conversion spindles that use your old balljoints but that use 71+ disc parts. They are together but I have not put them on yet...

Re: Disk brake Conversion

we used a 72 parts truck and swapped the entire front crossmember and rear end( have pics in my build thread). Typically ppl that do the front crossmember swap either swap the rear end to get the 5-lug or they get the conversion axles that are 5 lug... good luck
