59' transfercase
i got a 1959 GMC 2x4, now u may ask why i have a 2x4 and am asking q&a on the 4x4 post section, well, ever since i aquired the truck i've wanted to make it into a 4x4. i have looked into all the old NAPCO truck history and all that, and have been on ebay, craigslist, etc. almost everyday looking for old stock parts off of a NAPCO 4x4 truck, but with no success i have just decided to buy a front axle, and a transfer case to convert it. and so since it still has the stock 3 speed colum shift with a 327 sbc, i was wondering if i would have to get a special transmission for the transfer case that i wanted to put in. and if u could send me in the right direction about the transfer case/front axle it would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!! aaron |

Re: 59' transfercase
I have a converted 57. It has a Rockwell transfer connected to an SM420. If you got a transfer and transmission as a package, it would make converting a lot easier.
My front axle is a Dana that was taken off of a Jeep J10 pickup.

Re: 59' transfercase
if you have your heart set on sticking with a 3 speed trans, you can get pick up a 205/3 speed combo from a 70-72. check with bill at vintage chevy truck in fremont (510)651-5874. i've had a couple of the 3 speed/205 set ups over the years and i just looked at a 72 GMC 2500 with a 3 speed/205 about a week ago.

Re: 59' transfercase
You could also get a divorced t-case and just mount it behind your current tranny, and then find a front axle to match.

Re: 59' transfercase
i want to put in an auto tranny, but have heard from some friends that if the tranny isn't strong enough it could break so thats why i am trying not to mix everything up and buy an exhisting package with the tranny and transfercase

Re: 59' transfercase
if i were you i would o and find a rolling chassis for a 71-87 chevy(maybe even a complete truck) that has front and rear axles, suspension, and the tranny/tcase combo
by going that route not only would u be able to source both front and rear axes with the same ratios, and the tranny/tcase would allready bed paired up ather thing a complete parts chassis could possibly source for you are crossmembers, front and rear leafs and mount systems, modern power stearing box, drive shafts and so on good luck on the conversion nate
