Bed interchange

Please help out a newbie with what is probably a common question. I am rebuilding a 68 short stepside 4x4 that has a completely rusted out bed. Will either the newer or older stepside beds interchange without welding, fabricating, etc. I don't mind drilling new mounting holes or redoing wiring, but thats about it. I have a chance to get a nice bed from a 65 and would like to know what I may be up against. Thanks in advance!

Re: Bed interchange

I've seen a lot of people put on the new stepside beds on the older trucks, I think they have fiberglass fenders on them. not sure of the years that work, probably 90s? they line up ok, different looking wheel wells, and not sure how hard to install, but its been done enough.. I would consider it myself if I was lucky enough to find a short bed 4x4!

Re: Bed interchange

Here is what I did for mine initially.

Although iut deals with using a 73-87 bed, the stepside beds between 47 to 87 are the same except for a few miner changes. That thread should give you an idea of the tweaks for using one though.

Holy cow! Not exactly a bolt-on conversion. Thanks for the info and photos. Excellent resource for what I will be attempting!
