"396" to be or not to be!

Hey! i'm new to the forum and currently am doing a frame off rodsteration of a 68 lwb. It has a factory 396 4barrell carb and i am kicking around the idea of putting in a crate 572. I would like to know how rare is a 396 and what you guys think of them. I'd like to build a blindingly fast street truck. let me know you thoughts on the subject. Is it worth reviving?

is a 396 more special to you than any other big block out there?

Re: "396" to be or not to be!

Yeah because they are rare. I never wanted one until I got my 67. I could build a small block that could destroy a 396 but it would just be cool to have the old motor

I wish i could send you picks, but i can't figure out how to post them. I am clicking on manage attachments then finding the pick and then hitting upload it keeps saying upload failing. Is that the wrong way to post picks?

The pics you are tryin to upload are over the size limit. Do a google search for a resizer, or you can check this out and see if it suits your needs.

Re: "396" to be or not to be!

I personally love the 96'... But, if you want to build that truck you are describin, then by all means go for that GM mountain motor. The 572 is a beast, and not much can touch it.

Re: "396" to be or not to be!

Go for the big inch motor if you want to go fast. All the BBCs weigh the same and you may as well go for the cubes since they all cost about the same to build.

Re: "396" to be or not to be!

I have a 396 and love it. plus it's cool to keep the original motor in the truck and just build the heck out of it. i am about to tear into mine as well, so keep me posted and we'll exchange some notes.
